Software engineer in Zurich?

Hi all,
I'm just registered to this interesting forum.
Of course the reason is because I'd like to move to Switzerland.

I'm Italian, working as a Software Engineer in London. I'm doing mainly Java with quite modern technologies as well.

I had a read to few topics in the forum, and looks like that the language, in this case German and the fact of living already in Switzerland are good plus for finding a job.
I don't speak the language, so I'm going to Germany soon for a week because I registered for a course of German. I know that in a week I'll not going to lean much, but my idea is to start getting the grip.

I'd like to know your point of view about my situation, how difficult can be for finding a job there (I didn't apply to anything, yet).

Bear in mind that, here in London, the market is crazy, so recruiter contact you even if you're not searching and I'm sure that this kind of situation is hardly replicable there...

Thanks to everyone in advance.
Cheers

Re: Software engineer in Zurich?

Welcome to the forum. There are a number of Software Engineers in Zurich - there are many banks with IT needs, Google and IBM have offices and I am given to understand that there is a small start up scene.

It is probably one of the easier fields to find work in without German. Banks and multinationals often have English as a working language. But it is also competitive, and I would suggest not focusing exclusively on Zurich (or Switzerland), at least until you have an offer in hand. You will need to apply.

Thanks ThomasSSS,
In fact I was thinking Switzerland and then I thought Zurich as first try, but you're right, I should't focus on that city only.
Which other city do you recommend?

And why you said not to stick with Switzerland?

Any particular website you recommend for finding a job?

Sorry for the plethora of questions.

Many thanks.

Re: Software engineer in Zurich?

Both Zurich and Switzerland are nice, but small compared to NYC, London, Silicon Valley, etc. And it is known to be a nice place - you even find people who think they want to move here, seemingly without knowing the area at all.

So it is competitive, and there no guaranteed that you'll find a match. If you are unhappy in London, my advice is to search in every European city that you think could work for you - it would be a shame to spend months focused on Zurich if there is a good match in Berlin or Munich or Paris.

Re: Software engineer in Zurich?

The software developer market in Zurich is pretty saturated at the moment, so many firms have been cutting back and outsourcing.

It's not an ideal time for a newcomer as companies will tend to prefer those with obvious intentions to stay.

However - the usual Monster and Jobserve options cover Switzerland, and more specifically there's www.jobs.ch; from here you'll also get names of agencies.

Can you please justify your statement with facts?

I am a software engineer myself and I moved here half a year ago. I think the market is far from being saturated.

I know several guys from Eastern Europe who were recruited by UBS / CS HR-bots via LinkedIn. As far as I can see, this is happening on a regular basis and this is not anecdotal.

Moreover, there is not only Google, IBM and banks here; there are many SMB that lack qualified talent.

Just check:

www.ictjobs.ch
www.earlyhire.ch
www.freshjobs.ch

I know the IT scene now quite a bit and also know several IT companies that are hiring; so if you want, you can PM me.

if you are a real geek, most of the time you will not enjoy your life at a bank. At least two of my friends, who are more or less geeky did not like it.

Also finding a lot of clients are increasingly preferring the near shore options of Romania and Hungry over India.

I'm getting e-mails and calls from recruiters quite periodically. I cannot stop this. They ignore my requests to remove me from their base. Normally they are looking for a senior guys, in Zurich area and in most cases German is a must.

The two anecdotal cases I know, German was not a must. But then again it was UBS and CS.

Definitely true. At the same time I am not going to look for a job "somewhere". I can narrow down to Switzerland of Germany, so the German language will be a must, but I'll be happy to learn it on site, if I can.
So the idea is to find a company that hires people who speak English (and Italian, perhaps) with the possibility to learn German then.

Thanks again.

I guess I know what you mean and I'm afraid that even if I'm not a super geek, the idea to work for a bank doesn't really excite me (but never worked there before...)
