Is there any use for foreign MBAs in Switzerland?

Hey guys,

Quick background. I am a Italian/USA dual citizen. I was born in Finland, lived in Switzerland for three years, grew up in the UK and moved to the USA for university. I graduated from Campbell University with an undergraduate degree in Trust & Wealth Management, and have an MBA from Campbell University also.

I speak Spanish fluently and have about one year experience working with trusts exceeding 50 million USD.

This is all to ask you guys if international MBAs are respected in Switzerland, or if they even help whatsoever in the job selection process. I am beginning to learn German, but I fear I will not be fluent until I become immersed in the language. I have worked as a Trust Officer, but can work in many different business fields.

If any of you guys have any information which might help me out I would appreciate it extremely!

Thank you.

In Switzerland there are plenty of companies that regularly hire MBAs but they will look at rankings such as that from The Economist. Anything that is ranked close or above IMD and St. Gallen should be fine.

Thanks for your response! Unfortunately my MBA is not very highly ranked... It's good for my field but it's not ranked high at all. Would you say this will disqualify me from a lot of jobs in Switzerland?

Well it certainly will not give you an edge. The thing about an MBA is that it's value is directly related to the conferring college - the content can and often is the same, but the fact that you were admitted to a top flight college is what is what counts - you are seen as being among the best of your year.... It is unfortunately the same in many professions.

Yeah it is unfortunate :/ I was offered a rather nice scholarship so that is why I went there...wish I could go again! Would you say that this blunder will make it impossible for me to find employment in switzerland?

If you took the education you received and converted that to real business results in your previous position, that will be a good start. Don't expect a piece of paper to open the world for you.

Yeah, of course I don't expect people to be offering me jobs left and right haha. Honestly I just wondering that with my qualifications if it was even possible to get a fair job in Switzerland. I'm still hopeful, and if you have any advice on finding a job I'd love to hear it!

Yes. Why shouldn't it? There are plenty of people who have good jobs and no MBA.

Most Trust jobs are in Geneva. With experience and EU passport you should get one there

Re: Is there any use for foreign MBAs in Switzerland?

You have to be aware that in Switzerland, most people who go to university study to degree level (MA/MS) and not just to an undergrad level, as most in the US do. As such, an MBA will not make you stand out unless it's from a top 10 school and even then it's really just the brand and still doesn't have the standing it has in the US. It will not accelerate your career here either unless maybe in a handful of global MNCs.

That being said, it's also not a hindrance, so go ahead and start applying. Only mention your Italian citizenship - it would not be possible to get a permit for you on your US citizenship. Also note that Switzerland has a less dynamic labor market than the US and it is not uncommon to spend 6-12 months looking for a job, even with good qualifications. Why would you want to come here anyway rather than stay in the US for a while?

You should also be aware that BA and BS are degrees. MA and MS are higher degrees. Students working toward completing their first degrees are undergraduates.

That's excellent to hear, thanks. It's really nice to hear that my MBA won't hurt me at least. So should I leave it on my applications regardless?

And will do about my Italian citizenship. And although I have an American citizenship, I am not american culturally. I only moved here a little while ago, and I was raised almost entirely in the UK. Only one of my parents is American, so I didn't even celebrate any American holidays. All that to say that I don't like America very much in comparison to places like Switzerland haha.

Nobody ever gave a flying f*%& about the ranking of my MBA. Me included. Only a very few investment banks and maybe some private equity firms may care, for all the rest: HR or headhunter gets a job profile which typically says "technical degree a must, additional MBA desired". Your degree ticks the box and helps you land the interview, that's all.

You have no idea how much I love you for this comment. I honestly started considering doing another higher degree just to increase my chances of getting employed. Do you know of any good headhunters in Switzerland to help with my job search?

Headhunters in Switzerland are nowhere near to what you are used to in the US... my experience with them was that they are mostly a waste of time but can come in handy as test dummies to train your interviewing skills with.

Alright, thanks for the heads up. I haven't actually ever used a headhunter before, so I didn't actually know if it would be helpful. If you don't mind suggesting, any good resources for somebody in my position for finding employment? Thank you!

I think you need to make one more post and suddenly a couple more buttons appear underneath all posts... I am normally not the one on this forum who give the motivational posts but simply put:

- your Italian passport is worth it's weight in gold for you plan. Thanks to Schengen can you easily move to Switzerland and get a work permit - which is pretty hard for Americans these days.
- don't expect to get an offer in a week. Realistically will you need some months and probably a three digit number of applications. That you aren't around for interviews will make it harder...
