Our local Badi still has a large notice up stating that one shouldn't swim for two hours after eating.
I've heard a lot of people say the same thing at the badi too.

I'm not sure how the lake water permeates the skin, flesh, and reaches the stomach and causes some dangerous effect.

Luckily for me, I always shower before breakfast.

Perhaps a Swiss person on here could enlighten me?

Not a Swiss person but I heard very similar advice in US. " Delay swimming for 1 hour after a meal". The reasoning was that a (large) meal that the stomach was just beginning to process would increase greatly the risk of stomach cramps. Not sure if this is valid or just folk tradition. It also was posted prominently around lakes and pools.

I'll stop reading there. The person who supplied this white powder may (or may not) have been a homeopath.

It's not that. According to this popular belief there's a high risk to have muscular cramps (tendrils), because the blood is going to the stomach for digestion.
Or something like this.
(not a Swiss but this is a largely spread mythology)

Is that why lots of people faint after a large meal? - Lack of blood to the brain. (Oh, they don't).

Re: Homeopath looking for job

Well, another myth busted according to Snopes... their first reference goes back to a Scouting manual in 1906. Originally it was one and a half hours. In the 60's it was referenced as one hour, and I guess today in Switzerland it is two hours. Go figure!

I wonder how that relates to eating little and often in ultra-running

(Although there are some runners who will eat big at times)

It really depends on the size of the meal.

Exactly.

Btw, are you angry or something? I though it was clear that by using the word "mythology" I already implied what my views are on this matter. But you did get that, didn't you.
You asked what people think when they give this advice, I answered. (it's funny that I have to remind your your own question and post)

I actually asked what Swiss people think as there seem to be a lot of old tosh thought in this country about sleeping in drafts etc.

I didn't realise people in other countries still believed so much nonsense too.

I'm not a believer .. I'm always shocked at how this witch craft is sold in pharmacies as real medicine. The other day my 5 yr old was stung by a wasp in a shopping centre, wife took her into the nearest (chain) pharmacy, said she'd been stung, asked for some antihistamine or similar..

She was given 3 different preparations, made by the same company of course - take 7-9 of these little balls, dissolve one these tablets under the tongue and pour some of this liquid on the sting.. Complete shyte that cost nearly 50chf. Partly her fault for not speaking the language of course.. But after 40 mins the sting was still swelling and kid still in pain, went into another pharmacy who gave her real medicine which fixed the problem in 5 minutes.

I read the packages when i came home, no mention of stings, insects, bites, allergy.. Generic well being or something.

So yes I'm a definite homeophobic
Try vinegar on cotton wool applied to the sting. Cheap and worked for me. Do not use with bee stings though instead use milk. Apparently wasp stings are alkaline and bee stings are acidic. I read that somewhere years after I was stung when I was about 6 or 7 and shopping with my parents, the shop workers had given me the vinegar and it did work. Or at least I thought it did? I was only 6 or 7 and the adults told me it would work...

Actually, the best ultra-marathoners now seem to be fat-adapted and fast throughout the ultra-marathons.

Why a Swiss? My mother at home in England also told me that. She also told me that sitting on a cold step causes piles. And we all know that masturbating causes blindness. So where's the problem?

Having your mother tell you something is a bit different to having official notices everywhere telling you the same thing.
