Looking to return to work after being a full time mother

All,

I would be grateful for any guidance for my wife who is looking to return to work after a 6 year career break as a full time mother for our two children.

She worked for a large investment bank in Zürich as an IT Business Analyst having joined them through the Graduate Trainee Programme.

After our first one was born, she wanted to go back 60% but the bank insisted on a minimum of 80%. After a lot of thinking, she resigned in early 2009 to be a full time mother.

She has a Master's degree in computer science and a first class bachelor's in Physics. She is also legally allowed to work in Switzerland.

She has been going through a lot of company websites to see if there are any special programmes that help full time mothers get back to work but there doesn't seem to be any. With a 6 year break, she will almost certainly lose out to anyone with a recent work experience. Obviously she needs a firm or a recruiting manager with some sort of social responsibility who willing to invest in training her for the first few months to get her up to speed but there seems to be none in Switzerland (I know that such schemes exist in the UK and in the US).

She has just started applying and not surprisingly the initial applications have been rejected.

Please can we receive some guidance on the best way to approach this. Are there any firms or consultants that help mothers get back to work.

Any and all support will be gratefully received.

Re: Looking to return to work after being a full time mother

Hi!
Unfortunately I have no advice for you, as I am in the same situation, with the added challenge that I haven't worked in Switzerland yet. In a previous life (before Aug. 2012), I was VP Finance & Treasury with a background in project finance.

It's quite scary to go "out" again with no idea as to my market value here (low?), what is realistically possible to get and how I should approach potential employers. In Norway if you stop working it's pretty much game-over, is it the same here?

Hoping your thread will get som valuable answers...

Re: Looking to return to work after being a full time mother

Job searches are often difficult and advice from outsiders can be far off the mark. Some thoughts:
1. IT projects often need contract workers to work the length of a project. Would this be a possibility for her to restart her career?
2. Employers frequently advertise for <100% pensum positions, which may be directed at moms with other responsibilities. A search on "IT teilzeit" on jobscout24.ch shows a number of IT positions.
3. A search of the internet shows at least this website for job searching moms (but only one job listed in IT):
