Anatomy of a terrible interview

celebrating failure

Anatomy of a g̶o̶o̶d̶ terrible interview:

The interview meeting invitation gave me an option of attending in person or via webex- I did not notice this till 5 minutes before the webex. I was working from home in Zurich and the interview was in another city.

After some frantic messaging, the Interviewer logged into the webex- thankfully he had rescheduled several times so I had that to negotiate with.

All my negotiation points went down the drain when he turned on the video feature!!!! I had to, too, at a moment's notice! I had just had a shower, my hair was matted to my head, i had no makeup on, and- horror of horrors- I was wearing a crop top. A crop top!!!!!

I quickly ran from the bed (where I was sitting comfortably for the interview) to sit at the table. All was going well when I realized the Interviewer could see my washing machine in the background.

To top it, my cleaning ladies, who always come in on Wednesday evening, decided to stealthily come in early today. While seriously answering the question, "Why did you apply for this job?" I saw a flash of yellow and red uniform strolling around behind me, holding a vacuum cleaner, and mumbling in Portuguese.

The interview ended with the Interviewer saying, "I will keep my fingers crossed for you." He said it in a way that implied he would generally keep his fingers crossed for me, like people light candles for lost causes in church

Re: Anatomy of a terrible interview

My wife did a skype interview in Belgium for EPFL when we just arrived.
It was at my parents home.
First 3 dogs ran into the living room jumping up against her to say hello.
Then our cleaning lady started vacuuming in the kitchen (she did not know she was in the living room) Then my mom ran in to say good morning. and I am running around behind her in my work clothes outside (french windows) ....... .

She did not get the job

Everything happens for a reason they say....

Re: Anatomy of a terrible interview

I remember sitting on the toilet when I got a phone call from a recruiter. Talking away about my experience etc when I got up and flushed the toilet.

Awkward pause.

They never called back

I feel your pain. It reminds me about my interview from San Remo's four star hotel this Easter Eve. I got the message a day before from recruiter in Basel (French guy) that urgent interview will be held next day because the client is one shot chance and it must be done now! I briefly prepared myself for Skype interview next day at 9h00. Unfortunately I was pressed and had to do number one desperately. I did what I had to and when I was about to get up and flush ... Skype incoming phone call came in. So I was sitting there for about 1hour and 15 minutes motionless. Needless to say it went very well with Q&A but that memorable interview had left some discomfort in my nostrils ...

My advice, be prepared beforehand and don't kak in your pants

Re: Anatomy of a terrible interview

In one of my university interviews, I was so nervous as I left that I walked into the broom closet, rather than out of the door. (I still got in.)

I wish you the Best of luck

What funny stories! You guys are the best!

I was so 'traumatized' after the 'event' I took a break and went down to the Lake for a stroll and ice-cream, giggling to myself all the while :-D I will cherish this!

If you got in to the closet, I do hope you came out again.

coming out of the closet during an interview probably isn't the best tactic.

Re: Anatomy of a terrible interview

In my worst, the interviewer kept asking me strange questions about experience I didn't really have, veering into weird personal things like where I lived

Turned out the employment agency had pasted my name onto the wrong CV, which was not completely unlike mine, and he was trying to work out what on earth was going on

I didn't take the role - the manager was clearly weak, indecisive and not very bright!

Re: Anatomy of a terrible interview

When I was asked my biggest weakness, I said it is my honesty.

The interview told me he didn't think it was a weakness.

So I told him I didn't give a f**k what he thought.

Turns out being truthful is not the best policy during an interview.

For me it's sudden violent actions in response to idiotic questions posed by a pillock who doesn't know how to conduct interviews properly.

Re: Anatomy of a terrible interview

I recall some years ago my interviewer apparently falling asleep as I was trying to answer her question; don't know to this day if she had narcolepsy or was trying to make a point.

Didn't get the job, pity was a great company I'd still love to have worked for.
