Can an employer check your internet browsing history?

Can an employer in Switzerland check your internet browsing history at work? is that allowed or the employer needs to have a specific reason for doing that? legally speaking would the specific person who checks your history be liable for privacy infringement?

Worried if they can see that you watched porn during work hours? Yes browsing history can be seen, they don't even have to have access to your computer.

Re: Can an employer check your internet browsing history?

In what context? Whose computer (yours or the company's)? Generally speaking, you should be protected from unlawful monitoring based on the right to privacy, and data protection laws, unless your employer has a concrete suspicion that you committed unlawful acts (e.g. fraud).

Interesting questions. Beobachter says the below on this topic. Please use a web translator to translate to English, if necessary:

Normally yes. Your use of the computer at work is for business purposes and as such the employer can examine your computer. Not that I'm a lawyer but from the IT side of it normally your internet browsing is tracked anyway at the edge of the corporate network.

Re: Can an employer check your internet browsing history?

Ok if it's a company's laptop, the employer is allowed to make occasional sample checks to see if you are using it for private matters. Using a company's computer and internet connection for private matters can be argued to represent a form of job fraud.

Re: Can an employer check your internet browsing history?

In practice, if an employee is surfing dubious sites leading to automatic messages from the Virus scanners and Content Filters running to protect the company's network, he will draw attention to himself, which could be used to justify more specific and continuous monitoring.

Re: Can an employer check your internet browsing history?

Not sure about here, but in the UK private use of the company computer/s is often clarified in the contract and clear from the start.

Re: Can an employer check your internet browsing history?

Here the concrete legalities and a guideline issued by the EDOB (Eidgenössischer Datenschutz- und Öffentlichkeitsbeauftragter).

A 2013 case in the Tagesanzeiger about data collection of employees at Uni Zurich, explaining roughly what is allowed and when.

Company servers track and collect infos on the sites you visit and in some cases the content of your emails.
