Short answer - no. I assume the B permit is because of work in which case you're tied to living in the same canton that your workplace is based in which is Geneva. It's extremely difficult to get permission to live elsewhere on a tied permit. You might be able to get permission to move into Vaud canton, given that Geneva is so small, but Zurich - forget it.

Are you even sure it'll be a B permit? Usually the first permit for non-EU nationals is an L - same living restrictions though.

Firstly, how are you getting your B permit? Are you married to a Swiss national? Or is it through your work?

If you are getting a B permit because you're married to a Swiss, your work isn't tied to a canton. For example, I live in Zürich with my Swiss husband, I'm on a B permit, but my office is based in canton Fribourg. It's no problem at all.

I just had an idea! Maybe the authorities who issue the permits would know?! Either in Geneva or in Zürich. In case they don't have Google in Geneva yet, I've linked the contact numbers for the relevant offices. And in case they don't have telephones in Romandie yet, the addresses of the Office de la Population et des Migrations and the Migrationsamt are there too. But if they don't have the internet in Geneva yet and you can't read this, I'm at a loss to know what more we can do to help you.

But on a related topic, what do you mean by

... do you mean you're leaving but planning on returning some time, or you'll have to leave upon expiry of your L permit unless you find a new job (which might be in Zürich)?

Re: Can we change the canton

The Zurich Migration Office allows B permit holders (B=Aufenthaltsbewilligung) to change cantons so long as they are employed. To apply for a canton change, this office requires:

1. Criminal record extract
2. Employment contract
3. Confirmation from your commune regarding social welfare for past three years
4. A current credit history (Betreibungsregisterauszug) from your commune for past three years
5. Rental contract

If you don't have an employment contract or any of the other required documents, you won't be able to change cantons, imo.

If it's an open B, yes. But it would be very unusual to go from a tied L to an open B. Usually you go from tied L to tied B for around 3 years and then get an open B around your 5th year here.
