. UVG - Unfallversicherung, accident insurance: 1.53% (supported by employer?)
. AHV - Alters- und Hinterlassenenversicherung - pension 1st pillar: 5,15%
. ALV - Unemployment: 1%
. BFG - Berufliche Vorsorge(Gesetz), pension 2nd pillar. 2%-11%
. KTG - Krankentaggeldversicherung, icome insurance in case of sickness: 1.07% (supported by employer?)
The above are not taxes, but contributions to social insurances and yes, they are mandatory.
On top of that come income/federal/cantonal taxes. The exact amount differs by canton.

130K and up, I should imagine. And please do not underestimate how expensive it can be here for things that are ridiculously cheap elsewhere - baby wipes and cotton wool spring to mind.
What % of your income do you spend on baby wipes and cotton wool?
These you can stock up on when you're in Germany.

Hehehe. I buy it in France, actually. Or get visitors to fill luggage gaps.

The two thoughts were connected in my head, but not that connected!

You may like to check a few other threads out if you think this one is losing focus.

And this is a very, very, very frequently asked question.

FYI, and because it's benefit of the doubt for Newbies, "Dears" is a tad patronising, dear.

You've clearly not been here that long, have you? Who says we have to give efficient responses?

But then again EF has helped people finding places to buy towels and spots for romantic picnic

I've got time, explain your intention? I wasn't arguing. I was imparting some friendly advice. You sounded patronising to me.

Given this question is being asked in some way or another literally every week, I dare say the answers given here have, for the most part, been extremely - and surprisingly - civil, efficient, objective, helpful and free of irony and sarcasm. You should read a few others (use the search function and choose any of the three million threads that will come up around this topic) before making a judgment. The only thing that didn't add any value is your comment (and of course now my response to it, as I'll happily acknowledge )

Not sure about some of those, but you can rent for less than 3,000 CHFs. Hard to say about food but careful shopping and smart cooking should come in at less than 1,500.

Hi!

Please take a look below at my expected monthly expenses and let me know if my assumptions seem reasonable for 2 adults and 2 kids (3 and 1 year old):
. Apartment Rent: 3000
. Basic (Electricity, Heating, Water, Garbage): 300
. Healt Insurance: 900
. Food/groceries: 1500
. Transports: 250
. Car (insurance + gas + road tax): 400
. TV/Internet/Mobile phones: 250

TOTAL: 6600 CHF + 1000CHF (Mortgage in home country) = 7600C CHF
....
So this would give approx 1300CHF left for savings/german lessons/clothes/travel/ski/vacations (twice a year).!
I find all of this quite reasonable for a decent enough type of life as a family. And you do need to spend around 3k to get an okay apartment, because the quality and location of under 2k is pretty crap, and the OP will have no chance of accessing a "good" CHF2.5k apartment because he won't have contacts and will be using homegate or something similar.

It will be a change of lifestyle for sure with regard to eating out and reasonable quality meat and fish to be out of reach most times, so get used to tofu. The quality of meat you do get for the high price is also a lot less than Portugal (very much so fish). But cheese, right? And chocolate...?

You need around CHF140k for it, and be prepared to only start breaking even on the move after 3-4 months. Compare your pension in PT to what you will be getting in CH as well.

Hello everyone!

I know this subject has been discussed over and over and that the opinions differ a bit... However, as most of the posts are not that recent, I would like to raise this again.

I have the possibility to move to Zurich with my family (wife and two children of 3 and 1 year old) and I would like to know what would be a comfortable salary a nice living. We don't have to live in the city center, I have seen nice neighborhoods in the surroundings that I think could be a better option to save some money.

The idea is that kids will start school when they reach Kindergarden age (which I believe is free??) but this also means that my wife will not have any earnings before that. We have a comfortable life in Portugal and we understand that we will have to adapt our life style (for example, eating out in Portugal is relatively cheap and this for sure we will have to adjust in Zurich), but we would like to afford travelling in the country and neighbor countries and practice some skiing in the winter time. And of course have money for vacations twice a year (coming to Portugal).

Any thoughts/advice would be very welcome!
From my experience, I can tell you that with a family of four any salary above 7000 CHF per month post-tax is good enough to live comfortably in Zurich and make a relatively Ok-ish saving per month. Any thing less than 5000 and you will be cash strapped to make the 2 vacations per year that you have in your mind.
Regards

I wanted to post the same thing: in my opinion, a salary of 8000 chf after taxes will be sufficient for a decent life style of a family of 4, especially considering OP has 2 small children. How much could their things cost per month? I guess no more than 1000 chf.
First things that came to my mind
- rent - 3000 chf
- health insurance for the whole family 1000 chf
- food - say 1500 chf
- children cotton wipes - 1000 chf lol
- others - 1000
Everything else is a bonus.

Re: Salary needed for family of 4 to live comfortably in Zurich

Even the Emperor, President and Commander in Chief of the Democratic Republic of Kenistan knows you can buy 80 baby wipes for 1.35chf in Aldi.

And on the basis I revise my estimated down from 800,000chf per year to 798,000chf
(For which I will pick up a couple of groans from the humourless who believe this is the first "how much do I need to live off in Switzerland" thread.)

The OP has also put in 400chf per month for a car - which, depending on expectations, is either possible or wholly unrealistic. Buying an economical (7l/100km) 4k car (with fresh MFK), running it for 2 years and selling to for 1k is going to net out at around 40rpn per KM - assuming 12,000km per year, and no major repairs in 2 years (total maintenance budget for tyres, servicing, repairs = 1600chf). Leasing a 20k with similar consumption, warranty costs, servicing etc comes in around the 1chf per km mark.

Those figures are full life cost and include: insurance, roadtax, maintenance, warranty renewal, lease payments, initial payment cost.

Yes, but some bums only like Pampers etc or they get a rash. And nappy bags - you may need to revise your estimate again, oh Emperor.

The Royal budget simply does not stretch to pampers. The Emperic backside will remain being wiped by the 8 royal bottom wipers and Aldi's finest.
