Zurich - cost of living for a family (2 kids)

Hi All,

I am new here and would like to ask your advice.

Currently we are living in the Netherlands and considering to move to Zurich. I have a non-working wife and 2 kids (6 and 4). I got a nice offer from a multinational company as a gross base pay of 200k CHF. I was wondering whether it would be enough for a standard family life over there….we would like to rent a 4 bedroom house/flat, own a car, send the kids to local school etc. We have standard lifestyle without luxury needs, however we would like to keep our current quality of life (renting a 4 bedroom house, a few short trips per year as well as save some money)

I would appreciate your opinions.
Thank you.

No. You will live under a bridge and starve to death.

Sorry, no offense, there's ten million threads on this. Including stickies in some of the sub-forums here. Why don't you read those first and then ask specific questions if it's still not clear.

And frankly, a quick google search would reveal what the average household salary in CH is. I'll let you decide on your own whether more than twice that average salary is "enough".

If one earns double the average salary one simply doesn't google.

If you need to ask this sort of question, do you really think you're worth Chf 200k ?

If you're ALL vegetarian. If one of you eats meat things could get tight.

I've just been given a large box of chocolates and am feeling very kind towards my fellow men.

Lots of links on the subject in here - scroll down the first post a bit to see the right titles.

But please, please check where the threads are to be found so that you learn to find your way around the forum.
Happy hunting and welcome.

Re: Zurich - cost of living for a family (2 kids)

Hi,
I have the similar living style with 2 kids. Both kids go to International school. In my opinion 200k is good enough to live comfortably.

Your house rent - Around 4k monthly
if kids go to local school then that would be a big saving.

Thanks,
Manas

It is a very good salary even by Swiss standards. You can move to a low tax area on either side of the lake and save about 5-7K a year in taxes and use the difference to pay a higher rent than other areas. Or you can move to an OK area and pay less rent. In any case you should be able to get a nice 3 bedroom apartment somewhere from about 2800-3000 CHF (although even lower is possible), your children will be at local kindergarten until noon. Car and trips should be very possible too.

I confirm. I google a lot.

while we are at it, I am keen to learn what wage does the OP make in the NL to live up with the offer in CH.

Re: Zurich - cost of living for a family (2 kids)

That is actually a decent salary for Zurich and will afford a nice lifestyle. it is comparable to say €120-130k/year in NL.

Unless the OP is a C-permit holder or Swiss citizen, the gemeinde tax is irrelevant; B-permit means source tax, > 125k in a tax year means a tax return in that year.

And tax return means normally taxed at communes and cantonal tax rate.
It is a bit hidden in the first post dear Watson. But there you can see OPs estimated income and may come to the right conclusion.

I do not know what the gemeinde tax rate has anything to do with permit type. Whether tax is paid at source or not the rate stays the same. So he will have less deductions at source by choosing to live in a low tax gemeinde. In fact the Zurich canton tax calculator does not even take the permit type in to account.

Pure tax at source applies to B permit holders which earn less than 120k/annum. This tax is the same for every commune in the canton. Deductions are all-inclusive and the tax rate is cantonal average.

https://www.steueramt.zh.ch/internet...de/tarife.html

A B permit holder which earns more than 120k has to pay tax at source and fill in a tax return. Based on that the true tax owned is calculated. Depending on communes tax rate and your accusal deductions you either have to pay additional tax or you get reimbursed.
