Part-time work in database programming?

Hello all,

Does anyone in IT work part-time work in Switzerland at all? I'd like to find a part-time position in Zurich, doing database programming. Would it be best to just talk to a bunch of recruiters? Is there a big demand for my skills? What are the best websites to look for jobs on?

Some background - my husband may be accepting a position in Zurich in a few months. I've been working here in the Seattle area as senior SQL Server developer for over 10 years. For the past 4 years, I've been working on a part-time schedule, which allows me to work and also spend time with my 2 children. Legally I should be able to work in Switzerland because I have an Austrian passport (as my parents are Austrian).

Thanks to everyone in advance for any tips/advice! This is my first post - I think I'll be spending a lot of time on this forum!

Sylvia

Re: Part-time work in database programming?

Part-time jobs are very popular in Switzerland.
There are other threads pointing to various job sites.

Re: Part-time work in database programming?

Welcome to the forum.

I can assure you that your skills are on demand... banks and insurances never get bored of databases

You will hardly find any job ads for part time SQL developers but you have good chances if you apply directly. I guess the smaller software houses that supply the banks are more flexible when it come to the part time: They have a hard time to attract good staff as they are
a) not as famous as the banks directly on the one hand and
b) do not pay as much as the contracting agencies on the other one...
so as soon as you know when you will actually land here you can start to have a look around and you should be fine. There is hardly a better place to find IT jobs in Europe than Switzerland.

Re: Part-time work in database programming?

If you can, get your current employer to type up a description of what you're currently working on. Prospective employers like to see this sort of documentation. You might have to write it up yourself and try to get your management to sign it. It could make a huge difference.

Re: Part-time work in database programming?

Thank you for the details, Treverus! That's encouraging to hear.

I think as long as there's lots of demand, I should be okay, because even here in the Seattle area, part-time jobs are never advertised. What I've done is interview for the job, telling them that I have a limited schedule but not getting into it in depth, get an offer, and then tell them when I'm available. Hopefully it will work in Switzerland as well.

thanks again,
Sylvia
