Before some sarky b@stard like DaveA tells you
"120,382CHF with free lunches" ...
It would help if you mentioned your age, experience and the kind of job you're going for.

So are Serono recruiting again after being bought up by big pharma?

So it would appear....I've had a couple of head-hunter contacts recently for positions there...

Well I'm not the OP, but was also wondering the same question. Any rough ideas (and I realise they will be rough) for someone just finished a PhD, no industrial experience yet, going into their first job either in big pharma or a little startup?

Re: Pharma company- Research Scientist [salary question]

Salary for Scientist 1 is between 100,000chf and 110,000 (will depend on experience etc). No free lunches, little chance of a parking space at the above mentioned company and you'll hate the building!

Re: Pharma company- Research Scientist [salary question]

Thanks! I was estimating 80,000 since I dont have much industrial experience and I will probably be applying more for small startups that may not have so much money. So sounds like it should be that or a bit more.

Thanks again.

I know from experience that fresh out of a PhD you should expect closer to CHF 80,000. You should consider anything more a bonus. If you get offered more than CHF 120k, then consider yourself overpaid and enjoy it while it lasts!

Re: Pharma company- Research Scientist [salary question]

the last thread was so old I hope someone will reply to this, and also get a more up-to-date answer

I currently work in the UK on a 50K GBP salary and I got offered a position in a biotech in Switzerland. I am 36yrs old, 9 yrs work experience and reasonably senior (principal scientist) in my current company. They offer me 90K CHF gross which to be honest seems a very low offer to me. Can someone tell me if that is a fair offer in Switzerland? I plan to live in Zurich and does 90K CHF compare with 50K GBP in London?

Rule of thumb two times your UK salary in CHF so 100K for the same standard of living.

90K is plenty of money but you are right, 90K in Zurich will not go quite as far as 50K in London, and with your experience you should anyway expect more than 90K(assuming the role fits your experience).

All I know for definite is that lower (tahn what you describe) responsibility roles for younger people in the Biotech indrustry can expect around 90K

So for you.. I would be asking for at least 120K but would settle for maybe 110K

It might be worth finding out what benefits they pay. eg if they pay Health insurance (not many companies to to my knowledge) then this is saving you bout 4 K a year.

Most companies will offer some relocation help (free flat for 3 months, help with permanent flat search, Moving costs and arrangement) and pay for German lessons (2K per year). You should make sure they are throwing this sort of thing in. esp. if they are reticent about the fixed salary.

Re: Pharma company- Research Scientist [salary question]

Thanks JoMiFa, it is very helpful. Yes I feel I should be getting 110K minimum and the offer of 90K is way too low considering my experience. The company may offer relocation assistance it is something I am trying to negotiate, but won't be providing medical insurance. After all, it is a start up at the very beginning stage so benefit and pay won't be as good as big established companies.

Re: Pharma company- Research Scientist [salary question]

If it is a startup at beginning state then it is unlikely that you will be getting 110k. However, they might be willing to offer performance based stock options etc. Even managerial positions in a biotech startup don't really get 110k, especially in the beginning stage.
