Deductions from Salary in Zurich

Dear All,

Hello, and nice to speak to you all for the first time.

This is my first posting on the forum. I have a very interesting possibility of moving from Manchester (UK) to a job Zurich with a well-cushioned start-up company in the Technopark. My guess is that my salary will be of the order 120,000 to 140,000 CHf.

What type and size of deductions would a Swiss employer normally take from a salary in terms of the following (if you don't have the info to hand pls tell me where I can get this from):

Taxes;

Health insurance;

Accident Insurance;

Social security;

Pension;

Any others?

What, in addition, should we expect to pay ourselves in compulsory contributions from our own pay packet?

Medical insurance;

Council or poll taxes?!

Can someone please tell me what type of residence permit I should aim for?

I do most sincerely appreciate any help you give me.

Cheers,

LongJohn

Re: Deductions from Salary in Zurich

Your Questions:

Taxes; Called as Quellensteuer or Wage withholding tax (around 6.5% to 8%)

Health insurance; (Not deducted and usually paid by individuals, unless arranged by company. For one person depending on options it could be 180 (basic) to 400 CHF a month considering you are single)

Accident Insurance;
Social security;There are three pillers, AHV, ALV and NBUV which in all is 6.7% but might vary by 1%-2% with each company.

Pension; Again varys a lot but should be around 4% to 5%.

Any others?

What, in addition, should we expect to pay ourselves in compulsory contributions from our own pay packet?

Medical insurance; Covered under Health.

Council or poll taxes?!??

For Resident permit, obviously you should try for B and you will find lot of information in the forum about it.

Hope it helps

Have play with this to give you some idea.

Units per month = 1
Gross Monthly Salary = say 10000
Monthly Expatriate Expense Allowance = (for now)
Max pension
Include sickness

Re: Deductions from Salary in Zurich

krlock is closest in suggesting you factor in 30% for social deductions and tax in Zurich. Different communities in Zurich also charge different rates.

B permit pays tax at source (quellensteuer) which is higher than the rate a C permit holder pays (annually, themselves) "taxed as a naturalised person"

Re: Deductions from Salary in Zurich

Ok, here are the deductions that I am aware of you would pay on that salary:

Quellensteuer:

11.75% (120,000) to 13.64% (140,000) - it is listed on the Zurich tax service at:
http://www.steueramt.zh.ch/html/steu...if_a_QSt06.pdf

Deductions:

Insurance - accident (0.75%)
other - like travel cover and stuff is possible also, but not definitely maybe for 1%

Social security - AHV (state pension and disability) - 5.05%
ALV - Unemployment - 1%

Pension - probably around 5% (hopefully matched by the company)

Other cumpulsory contributions? Like union fees? nothing I think. You might want to open a retirement account ("Pillar 3a account") which you can put a bit over 6000 per year into and not have to pay tax on that money (well you get the tax back at least)

Medical insurance - you need to pay this yourself. from 175-300Fr per month

Council or poll taxes - all included in Quellensteuer

For the permit - demand a B, don't come for an L, you wont get a C. You have problems renting a movie on a L, its brutal...

30% is a good rough number (including medical) you can use for calculating, it shouldn't be any higher...

Andrew

Re: Deductions from Salary in Zurich

you will pay local and national tax (that's two segments), social deductions and pension contributions, health insurance.

your employer pays for accident insurance.

There are no poll tax or council taxes; they're dealt with in the local part of tax.

Effectively your deductions should be between 25-30% in total.

Aim for a B permit.
