masters or PhD

Hi,
I am thinking of trying to get a job teaching at college or uni when I move to switzerland.I have been offered a job teaching undergraduates at a uni here in scotland, but I wondered if it is possible to teach at Swiss Uni/ Haute ecoles with only masters degree- I would be prepared to study for a PhD ( health/nursing/social sciences)?Anyone any ideas?
Jo

Re: masters or PhD

The teaching at the undergrad level is done in the local language here, so you would need to be very proficient (maybe not a problem?).

Nursing training is an ausbildung program, so done in specialized colleges and the language of instruction is the local language (in my part swiss german, **not** high german). I believe for nursing teaching you would need to be a qualified nurse in CH and take another year of specialized training to qualify as a nurse trainer.

You might have a better chance in Social Sciences/health at one of the Fachhoch Schule (sort of equivalent to a community college) where they teach things like nurse assistant and such, but again the language would be the local dialect.

One thing you might consider is if you take the PhD road, then here often you are paid a salary during your studies (engineering and Science definitely, psychology as well, don't know for sure others). So if you are thinking to teach for the money then it might not be necessary - though during your role as a PhD student you would likely get teaching duties of some sort or another.

Hope that helps!

Andrew
