Broadcast Graduate moving to Zurich

Hello,
I am moving to Zurich in July from England. My girlfriend is Swiss and already has a job in Zurich. I will soon be graduating from university with a degree in Broadcasting. I hope, if possible to find work with in film or television production. My prefered area of interest is documentaries. Any tips on where and how to find such jobs would be welcome.

If I am not able to find a job within the broadcast, I quite like the idea of being an au-pair or nanny, as this would also give me the opportunity to improve my german language skills and work with children which I very much enjoy.

Has anyone got any pointers in finding jobs in either of these two fields?

Cheers

Sam

Hi Sam,
I can tell you a little about the broadcasting industry in Switzerland. First of all, most business is based in Zurich - so you're coming to the right place.

Secondly, the market is largely freelance. There are only a handful of companies that employ full-time staff. Swiss Television is in Zurich too - however, it's difficult to get into without connections, as they are outsourcing more and more all the time.

"The" address book for the film branch in Switzerland is called the "Cinememo". You can order it on http://www.cinerent.com/e/default.php. You will find contact details of freelancers, branches, film houses, institutions, suppliers (from lighting to post-production facilities) etc. It is THE source for all TV/film professionals in Switzerland.

A lot depends on the position you're seeking. Directing, producing, runner, technician, editing etc.? Do you have your own equipment?

I don't want to put you off, but please remember that Switzerland is primarily a print market. Getting film & TV work will take some perseverance - but it is possible. Good luck!

Re: Broadcast Graduate moving to Zurich

Hi Sambc,

Check out some other avenues first & if no success I could contact a friend of mine - He is swiss, has his own business, and well known in arts/film/architecture.

Or come to Zurich & hang out with the "arty" types in "those" type places?
