I am looking into the English teaching qualification, but I am not sure which is a better qualification for Switzerland - TESOL or CELTA.
As far as my research has indicated I have only been able to find CELTA offered in Switzerland but TESOL is about 2000chf cheaper. I would be able to get it done in the UK or Spain cheaper than here, BUT no point trying to save money if it is not excepted.
Any experienced English teachers who know and can help??
Hi there,
The TESOL v.s the CELTA, to be honest there isn't much in it. They are the same thing, but certified or validated by different people. The TESOL is by Trinity and the CELTA by Cambridge.
I did the TESOL in 2005 in Prague with Oxford House, and I can whole heartedly recommend them.
Short term, anyone who will take you with the CELTA will be happy with the TESOL, but it can get awkward later on if you want to do more training. The young lerner extension for the TESOL is rare and not as highly though of as the CELTA YL extension. If you do the YL extension and you have a TESOL you don't get the cambridge certification. Plus if you stay in teaching you will probably want to the DELTA, again a cambridge certification. You can do the DELTA with a TESOL, but a lot of the course refers back to the CELTA course so the TESOL bods I know who have gone on to the DELTA have felt a little left out.
The only thing to watch out for is that the course is in fact validated/moderated whatever by either Trinity or Cambridge, a lot of places offer their own certification, which is fine if you want to work for them, but not exactly transferable.
Best of luck, I have to say that I loved the TESOL experience,
