Can't find this on the forum, but what are the rules for short periods of sick leave? Do we have to provide a doctors note?

Technically speaking, For 1 day... No doctor note required but your employer has all the rights to ask for it.

After 3 consecutive days a doctor's note is required. Just 1 or 2 days, no probs

Your employment contract should state what this is, as it can vary from employer to employer

My contract states that I should provide one after 5 days consecutive sick days so I guess it varies.

It also depends on how often you phone in sick. If you do so regularly , your employer may request a doctor`s note after the first day.

I just checked - technically speaking, your employer is entitled to ask for a doctor's note from day 1 if nothing else is stipulated in your contract. However, if it says after 3 or 5 days, then he may not ask for a note from day 1.

I thought there was a rule about more than 3 days in a row needing a doctor's note.
Personally, I almost always present a doctor's note whenever I take a day off sick. If I wasn't sick enough to visit a doctor then I wouldn't be taking a day off work. |

I can go to work, incapable of a logical thought, and pass it on to some of the other folk I work with; I can go to the doctor's and give it to someone else whose resistance is perhaps lowered by real illness; I can stay at home and give my body time to heal itself. Which it does, up until now, very successfully. My bosses knew me well enough to accept that when I said I was ill, I was.
Back on Topic - Möpp looked it up so she's most probably right!

Hope it's Ok to add this to the thread - does anyone know what/if there are entitlements to take your paid sick leave to care for a sick child or spouse ?

There is no enforceable legal entitlement.

Sick child : 3 days I believe, per sickness if you have a medical certificate from the child's doctor indicating that the presence of the parent was necessary. Check with HR. They can't refuse a parent with a medical certificate.

Yes, as Sky said, for children it is 3 days per instance per parent and only if you have a doctors certificate (but not all companies enforce that).
Many companies aren't aware of this rule so it is good to know your rights. The corresponding law is Art. 36 Arbeitsgesetz.

Hi,
How does sick pay work for part time workers?
I work as a bouncer in a club in Verbier, and cought Pneumonia last week so have been unable to work.
I've missed 5 nights, and i'm being told i wont get paid for my missed shifts?
(if they'd have got the gas 4 the heaters i would have been ok, working days on the trot at -15)
I have provided the doctors notes to my manager.
Where do i stand? |

This is fully dependent on your contract of employment. If you are only working on a casual basis then you are not covered. IF you are working on a contractual basis (ie 8-12 5 night per week) then you might well be. | Quote: | | | | | Hi,
