Advice on au-pair work (in particular the age limit).

Hi,

I'm moving to Basel and am thinking about doing some au-pair work.

Looking at a few websites, I have found a few different maximum ages for au-pairing (25-30). I have a suspicion that perhaps it is different for each canton (surely not!!). I'm most likely moving to Basel-Land, so would be looking for information regarding BL or BS.

Does anyone know what the maximum age is, for a non-EU citizen (Australian)?

Please see the au pair threads, where it explains the differences.

Please also note, if you are an English speaker, you cannot employ an au pair who is a native English speaker, ie an Australian.

Re: Advice on au-pair work (in particular the age limit).

I wanted to say that I was a Nanny in Basel for a period of time. I have no idea if a Nanny and an Au-pair are considered the same. But I was employed legally by a American/British couple.

Also, I would not think that being self-sufficent on an Au-pair's salary is really do-able. You would need a 2nd income to survive.

I disagree, our live in au pair received CHF1000 / month with virtually no costs, she was happy and had use of a car. Great saving scheme for University.

I do question the motives if you are nearly 30 years old and want to be an au pair.

Thanks for your help. Unfortunately I'd already read your suggestions. What I'm really trying to find out is if there is an explanation of why I keep finding different maximum age limits. My only theory is that perhaps it varies between cantons, and I thought maybe someone who'd au-paired in the past might know.

I've been working (happily and sucessfully) for the last 8 years since University, am ok with having a career break, and since I'm moving to Switzerland (to join my fiance) I'm trying to find something to do during the day, and a way to learn the language. Not so strange, I don't think.
