Re: Paying a nanny/day mum etc. AHV? tax?

Are you taking out private sick pay insurance on top of all the normal social insurances for your nanny? Can you say how much the premiums are?

Thanks.

Do you go down this route in the end?

We are employing a nanny at present and our insurance broker seems to be happy to do all of the legwork/paperwork (free of charge). It may be because he is a friendly guy but I am assuming its because he is picking up the premiums too.

On that note what do people think about sick pay insurance. The broker is suggesting its a no-brainer because the employer has a responsibility to continue paying if the nanny goes sick - but I guess the devil is in the detail (and price). ie do you have to pay sick pay indefinately or for a maximum period? Does sick pay only kick in after x days and with a doctors note? How much does the insurance cover when you are paying the nanny by the hour and with flexible hours per month (although realistically with a minimum 50-60 p/m)?

Anyone with experience of this?

Still working out whether its worth it but cost is 11.15% of salary. It is proposed if we take it that employer/employee pay 50% each.

That is a hell of a lot of money. The nanny would have to be off sick for over 1 month to make it worthwhile and I am sure there would be a lead time before they pay out. Thanks for the info anyway.

Re: Paying a nanny/day mum etc. AHV? tax?

Just spoke to the broker. % depends on factors such as age (our nanny is 50+). We have now managed a better quote so maybe worth shopping around.
Background info:
What I am being told is that in Swiss law:
  • In year 1 the employer must pay full pay the first 3 weeks of any illness.
  • In year 2 the employer must pay full pay up to the first 2 months of any illness.
  • These numbers are not cumulative. ie you can have 2 x 3 week illnesses in year 1 and still expect to be paid
The insurance I am being quoted on only kicks in after 2 weeks illness - ie only saving me 1 weeks salary per illness in the first year. However the main benefit is for the nanny as it will cover them for up to 2 years full sick pay if needed (hence they pay for half of it).
