I have tried to search for the answer to my question in the existing threads but can't seem to find anything directly relevant. I hope someone can help.

I recently moved to Switzerland from the UK with my partner who was offered work here. I am continuing to work "remotely" on a casual basis for my old company in the UK. I obviously want to do things the right way here so I am guessing that I need to somehow declare my earnings and pay tax on my income. The problem is, I literally have no idea how to do this. Do I need to register as self employed? Where on earth do I begin?

You should:
1. Register with the AHV to open your social security account
2. Fill out an application to become self-employed at the equivalent of "Amt für Arbeit" in your Canton (It's the KIGA in BL)

At the risk of sounding completely stupid though, can you please tell me what the AHV actually is? I am sure this is really obvious but being new to Switzerland, I am still learning the basics.

In French it's AVS which is pension and social security. You'll find it here.

Blonaybear, thanks for this. I wonder though, is this the same office where my partner and I had to announce our arrival, and where we went for our work permits? I ask because if it is, then the office we went to is not the same one you have found in the link.

Another question - does anyone know what documentation i will need to show to demonstrate that i am self employed?

For my wife's application, they asked for copies of invoices made out to customers, proof of investment into the business, a short description of a business plan (this probably needs to be more complicated for larger businesses), advertising material, price lists - all this along with the filled out form.
