Hi everyone

I have decided to take a one year sabbatical from my job as an Engineer in England to live in the same country as my Swiss-German girlfriend and hopefully pick up some German along the way (this has also been requested by her Gran…..so I’m told!).

I will move over in Mid-November and plan to spend the winter doing a ski season in a German speaking resort. Do you think it is best to go for a larger resort (such as Zermatt) where finding a job may be easier, or a smaller place like Andermatt where getting to know the locals may be easier?

I would appreciate any advice on where you think would be a good location and any tips or experience you may have on finding work for a season in a specific resort. Should i start applying now?

Hopefully by the spring my German will have improved (from pretty much non-existent) along with my boarding!

Did I understand you correctly that you're looking to work as a ski teacher ?
I have a friend who used to do just that for many years, he loved it but said he had work random jobs in summer to subsidize his winters and Ski seasons can be very short here... But random jobs in gastronomy etc. are always available in the season!

I would love to work as a ski teacher, but unfortunately my boarding skills aren't up to that kind of standard yet! I'll preferably be looking for some sort of driving job or general resort based position. i believe these normally come with accomodation, food and sometimes ski pass & equipment hire.

i would work as a mechanical engineer whilst there but i'm not sure how much call there is for one at a resort!

To be honest i haven't really thought about the summer too much yet, hopefully i'll meet some people whilst i'm out there who could help me out. i'd love to work outside in the summer though, something different to my current office job!
