I any case, I did not ask the original question, just commented on it as it seemed similar to my position. And I have done lots of research, speak good enough French to understand the gist of the canton websites on tax, have been provided with a breakdown of deductins by KPMG BUT nothing will give you an idea of what typical salaries are for comparable jobs in other countries. A bunch of people who have been through a similar experience and lived in several countries will. Hopefully even to stupid people.
Thanks to those who helped...x

It's a common phenomenon, pay no heed, and don't let it put you off the forum. | | | | | That's sooooo untrue. I wouldn't get out of bed for less than a castle and 3mil
a day, but I understand that others may have to struggle by with less |

125k in Fribourg is more than adequate for a very nice standard of living.

Try to find a cost-of-living calculator that compares your current city with the area you're moving to. You might need to break this up into multiple steps (cost-of-living converter for your small city to London, for London to Geneva, for Geneva to Fribourg). You can find these on the internet. You can also find reports on typical salaries in various fields on the internet with a bit of googling.
Once you've done this you need to break down your current compensation (salary, bonus, commission, healthcare, pension) and taxes/deductions and compare with CH. For example, you will need to pay for health insurance out of pocket for each member of your family. You will be subject to a different tax rate depending on the canton that you live in. You will have to make your own pension contributions. See if your employer will increase your salary to compensate for this.
Last, you need to figure out how much you spend/month at home and try to do a rough comparison to CH. Housing, schooling, food, clothing, transportation, entertainment, travel, plus the added cost of maintaining two households. We found that we needed about 30% more to come close to maintaining our former standard of living in California.
Good luck to you!

I'm beginning to think that these are subtle bragging threads and not actually looking for real advice.

Will the expat really make that much extra for the company per annum?

There are enough threads asking about can I live in such and such a town on such and such a salary that people should be able to use the search function. The mods should be deleting these threads as soon as they appear, IMO. | | | | | Now now, where would the forum get rid of its pent-up pi$$edoffness? | Quote: | | | | | I apologise if I offended anybody with my post. It's a big life choice to make from another country, without any understanding of the tax/healthcare and cost of living. And people looked pretty helpful on here, so I thought it best to be upfront. | | | | | Back in the days before Englishforum (heck, it was even before Google!), I packed my worldly possessions into a car and began the long and dangerous journey from Ape Island to Swiss Island. Armed with a map, the words "Ich spreche kein Deutsch" and a fistful of, erm, steering wheel, I began my adventure of living in a dirty foreign country.
I had no idea if my salary would ensure I would not have to steal the stale bread on a Saturday night from the back of the local Migros - nor did I care.
I though if the local inbreds could survive here then so could I. And so will you. And your Mum | | This user would like to thank Boxman for this useful post: | |

I have never felt more confused and troubled in being a native English speaker than after watching that YouTube video. I guess I should've opted for the English major, instead of just the minor.

1) you have dependants
2) the EF (& Google) is available?

Be honest now... | | | | | Can I truly be honest? I think I'd say yes.
After all, I am considering moving a long way away at some point.
I do think the Internet's made it easier but I also think it's made people lazier. This thread being my evidence....!

Fair enough.
