does anyone have experience with or know of an English speaking career councillor or a recruitment consultant in Zurich who deal with scientists
In particular, I'm searching for career possibilities outside academia or research institutes. I've been through a whole bunch of submissions and interviews and "just" keep missing out on those elusive academic posts.... so i'm looking for alternatives.... and would like to talk to a professional about this.
any suggestions, PM me.
cheers
Nic
(PS - i know the market is tight now, hence my interest in being flexible seeking out other avenues)
If no one has any other ideas or know anyone, perhaps it might be useful to contact one of the international school and ask their career guidance office if they know anyone who deals with adults in Zurich?
Might not go anywhere, but it might be worth a shot.

Nic,
I had a career councillor for one year; a nice guy I can give you his details; but well ....I am still looking for a job, more then 18 months later. What did we do;
Well we looked at my resume; he recommended I make it as short as possible; today it is the original length if not longer, several recruitment agencies subsequently asked me/advised me it was too short...
He recommended I write a standard application letter for every application; ok wasn't doing that now doing so; net net my writing skills/letter writing some 400+ applications latter has definatively improved, and I have had to think much harder about each application, although well ... still here.
I met and talked to a psychologist who advised I needed to look for jobs in which I used X skills and do not require Y skills... a lot of tosh really, again nice guy; living in an ivory tower and well must admit if I took his advice I'll never find a job again.
We did some interview practice sessions (video'ed) which we played back and he spoke about rights and wrongs... useful, but you can find similar tips on you tube with guys like "Brian Krueger" who gives first time job searcher tips, although there some good stuff here. Here's a good one for example.
Did it help; maybe, should perhaps have done more of these then we did in retrospect, but wait is this your weakest point or are you as your message suggests failing to even find opportunities.
We had a couple of very useful discussions on self employment; a direction I am looking towards at this point, although not perhaps an obvious avenue for somebody with your skill set although I honestly dont know.
Feel free to drop me a PM if you want to chat, exchange some ideas?

Hi Mark,
i am finding opportunities and am doing quite well (final cut etc.) - but always seem to be "just" missing out . I have even been offered a position (but this was just retracted due to funding cuts ). My main point is that I am not getting ahead in the no-career-stability-oh-my-god-what-happened-to-the-funding-rollercoaster that is science. So, I would like to find out what an applied physicist with a PhD in atmospheric sciences/nanoparticles and a few years research experience can do outside of a Uni/Research Institute
NicM,
Are you limited to staying in ZH? If not, the newly established Adolf Merckle Institute at the University of Fribourg is specialized in nano research. Have you tried there?

I was thinking the same thing; you're either totally unemploayble or you're applying for the wrong jobs.
Beginning to think the latter, thanks for reminding me.
What's wrong.
1/ Too old, too senior; now 44.
2/ Too young, not enough senior experience on my CV
3/ In wrong industry, banking 7 out of the last 10.
4/ In wrong profession, IT likes young fresh blood
5/ In the wrong place, dont speak German, French need improvement
6/ Made some poor career decisions for which I am paying dearly perhaps
7/ Been looking for a job for too long
