| | | Is the British BA Degree recognized in Switzerland ?
Hi everybody, my post is related to educational part, but I dont know where to post it, so I am just writting here.
Does anybody know that the BA degree from UK can be accepted here or not. I,ve graduated from a private hotel school in Switzerland, everyone knows that all the private school degrees here are not recognized by the state. Thus, my school associates with the Manchester Metropolitan University to award dual degrees for their students.
In this case, I wonder that is my degree valid like official Swiss degree, does anyone here in the same situation ?
Thank you very much for reading and replying my post.
Greetings.

And the MMU is an accredited university, so you're alright there as well.

It's not about whether a British degree is accepted in Switzerland, it's about whether or not your prospective employer/association recognises your degree.

It might also depend on what the equivalent is for your qualifications.
I have a degree for which there is no equivalent in Switzerland...I applied to CRUS for recognition of my qualifications, and after a little bit of to-ing and fro-ing I was given a letter to confirm that there is nothing equivalent in Switzerland and that I can use my English terminology when describing myself but cannot be given a German equivalent.
What this means is that my employer then has to consider my CV and pay me according to what they think I am worth - in my case, I am being paid as a degree qualified professional for the job that I do, even though I do not have the specific degree that a swiss person would have to do that job.
Does that make sense ?
I do think it's something you have to sort out up-front when you are offered a work contract - you outline your CV and from that they dissect your qualifications and decide what level to pay you at - if you are not happy, you state your case...
In my experience it's a discussion that is rarely resolved once you are 'in the job'...better to get paid at an acceptable level from the beginning...
Same with years of experience. Some jobs pay a legislated rate based on your years of experience (teachers are typical) - so once you move systems, your CV will be what this is based on (some systems don't recognise you for years of experience teaching outside their system)...

Greetings. | | | | | There are various agreements between the EU and Switlerland for the acceptance of degrees and professional qualitications for the purposes of attending college or practicing professions. It is complex area and you'd need to do lots of reading to figure out what is what!
However there is one very important point to bear in mind and I think it may have an impact on your situation - acceptance is based not just on the awarding body but also on the citizenship of the holder of the degree or qualification!
For example: I'm a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland and as such I'm fully entitled to practice my profession in Switzerland. However one of my friends in the Institute is not able to do this because he does not hold Irish or EU citizenship.
I could well imagine that if you were applying to a college here and you had the degree they'd accept it no problem. But if the degree is required as part of a professional qualification to offer services to the public, then you may find that they are a lot stricter on this point.
Good luck with that,
Jim.

I also have degrees from other western countries which are a bit different from here. When applying for a job in Switzerland, I added a table to the end of my resume with key courses and important content related to the specific position when it seem to be a very important requirement for employment. This has worked very well for me.

Good mornings guys,
At the moment, I am working for a hotel in Bern, and they pay for me with a standard salary of no education or just a vey basic level according to a Swiss salary system chart which I,ve read somewhere but I forgot the source (between 3.100 till 3.500 CHF). I dont complain about that as I am still a foreigner here and with just a basic level of German. The only thing I would like to know if my degree is valid here, so that I can apply for a master degree in Switzerland later when I have a chance.
Good day to All.

| | | Re: Is the British BA Degree recognized in Switzerland ? You mentioned that you speak only basic German. In my discussions with counselors at the University of Zurich, and St. Gallen they both required a minimum of C1 level of German for the masters program that I was looking at. The language piece might be a bigger challenge. Perhaps you might consider sitting down and showing your qualifications with a counselor at the school that you're interested in. Certainly, they can answer this question with the most accuracy. Did you find a school that teaches in English? Then it’s probably private and you likely will have no problem. I'm getting a Swiss MBA in English. No problems with a legitimate foreign degree in a similar field.
Good luck in your studies!

Hi Chicago,
Yeah, I have found lots of private schools that teach in English, but the problem is the school fee is very high, around 10 times than Swiss Uni. I studied in a private school here 3 years already, and I want to have a change, thats why I am looking for that. Anyway, I am not in a hurry, still keep learning German now. Maybe 2, 3 years later, I will have a better solution.
Have a nice weekend.

One of my degrees is UK validated and the Swiss University counselor didn't bat an eye when we were discussing steps to getting into the PhD program (half English/half German) after my MBA.
I'd contact the school of your choice. You'll likely get positive results or guidance as to how proceed to achieve your goal. I found the counselors very helpful.
Private school here is still costs much less than in the states where I'm from so it is affordable in my eyes. And in professional roles, many employers here reimburse for education costs.
I preferred the option of studying in my native language over struggling with German even though I meet the criteria. I just didn't have the extra time for translations and second language writing while attending school and working full time. Hats off to those non-native students - so impressive.

I dont know how much it costs in the states, but when I was studying in my hotel school in Luzern, it was expensive for me, around 30.000 CHF for per semester (5 months academic including school fee, food and accommodation, then optional half year paid in training). | Quote: | | | | | I preferred the option of studying in my native language over struggling with German even though I meet the criteria. This time I promise with myself I will study here one more time, but with German. Time goes, everything can be done, right?
