I've been looking everywhere for a bar/nightclub or even regularly scheduled events that are for people over 40 in Basel...

There must be some...but they are doing a good job of hiding it from me (or I'm just looking in the wrong place for them).

I would love to go dancing, but I'm just not interested in the sort of music you usually hear in the bars for 20somethings...

Back in the UK I would dance about to live bands but haven't found much live music in my genre (indie, pop) here. An 80's night somewhere would be fun - but would have to be non-smoking. We went to Kuppel to see some bands (finally an indie night) and were shocked that (a) a venue could be smoking and (b) we had to 'buy' a Fumoar card to go in even though we don't smoke!!

So in order to get my smoke free dance fix I joined a gym and go to zumba. I love it!!!

The ü40 sounds interesting. I will have to go check it out with some of my friends. And the Zumba too...it looks like a lot of fun and is something I can do on a regular basis to stay in shape too...perfect!

For going out dancing...I'm looking for music mostly from the 70s and 80s...90s would be OK too...but mostly I just don't want to be surrounded by kids. For whatever reason I just feel strange being one of a very small group of people in their early 40s or older in a bar or nightclub. Generally everyone else there is early 20s to early 30s.

No, not at all! My solution is to go where there is music I like (www.tillate.com) and ignore the children around me. I am there to dance and have fun and no one bothers me or the other parents I am with.

You need to know the right terms to google. Unfortunatley is that a bit tricky with Swiss German as every city has its own. In High German, you are looking for a "Gammelfleischparty".

fümoir is a "smoking verein". it is a temporary solution to bypass the new smoking-law. only members are allowed to enter an etablishment part of the fümoir verein (around 150 bars and clubs). i am certain that soon a court will ban this kind of smoking club, but this beeing switzerland it will take some time.

Switzerland should be right up your street music wise.

Can't do much about the teenie boppers I'm afraid but at least you'll know all the cool moves and will have them in awe with your breakdancing and body popping
