You can't miss the Chässtube Rehalp. But it's got mostly traditional fondue and none of the trendy ones with paprika, onions, bacon and what-not.

Be sure to take the options for pineapple, pear, pickled onions, baby potatoes etc .. to dip in. They have nice Grappa to.

Fondue tram is great, I mean were else in the world can you sit and enjoy the night view of the city and taunt people standing in the cold whilst you feast on fondue and beer !! And get to pop outside for a Gypsies Kiss in the bushes during the scheduled stops ? Awesome, Awesome

I was a big fan of Walliser Kanne in Basel but plan to go for my first Zürich fondue this weekend. I'm looking for recommendations (on the fondue, the wine, the atmosphere).

This one is related to 2 other fondue/raclette restaurants, the Fribourger Stuebli and the Raclette Stube. Their websites can be found here. I haven't been to the Rehalp yet, but have been to the others many times and love both of them. I've also only heard good things about Rehalp so you can't go wrong with this group.

I also like Le Dezaley. This is a good option if you're going with people who don't like/want cheese fondue since they have meat fondues and a large menu of Swiss cuisine as well.

The Chäsalp is very good and it's in an old barnhouse.

Wow, this is an old thread. Anyhow, here are my thoughts on Fondue/Raclette in Zurich.

1) Avoid the fondue tram if it is the fondue itself you're after and not just atmosphere - it really is the WORST fondue I have ever had - we did a team outing on it last year and while the atmosphere was fantastic, the fondue really s***ed (my whole team thought so.)

2) I still like Le Dezaley best if you have a group of people and not everyone is a cheese fondue fan. Not the best cheese fondue in town but certainly acceptable and everyone can order whatever they want.

3) My favorite cheese fondue in Zurich City is Fribourger Stubli - http://www.fribourger-fondue-stuebli.ch/ - need to book in advance though. Cheese fondue is all they have though so everyone has to be interested in having it. (You'll see they are related to Chässtube and Raclette Stube - both also good.)

4) Best restaurant with both fondue and raclette is in Kusnacht - don't have the name of it off hand - will edit message when I can get it. Only place I know in Zurich that does raclette the traditional way - melting the wheel of cheese in front of a woodburning fireplace (right in the restaurant). Again, need to book ahead for this place.

5) Fondue with a view - for a team christmas dinner we had fondue up at the Uetliberg. Like Dezaley, they have more than just cheese fondue - we had the meat one (Chinois) and it was excellent.

Mmmm, now I am in the mood for fondue!

I have to make the final decision for this weekend but I guess there is time all winter to try them all.

The great place in Küsnacht is
Cave Valaisanne / Chez Crettol - Küsnacht.

They have good wines, kirche and fondue. I've not tried the raclette which they make on an open fire. Book early to get the room with this open fire ..it's really cosy.

I liked Le Dezaley when I went and found it difficult to stop eating the fondue. I had the standard cheese one but I did notice they have one with morels on the menu too.

I'm interested to try the Fribourger Stubli now.

This was going to be my suggestion as well, the restaurant is fantastic and they have many different kinds of fondue to choose from.....my favorite is the tomato! It's the best fondue I've had in Switzerland.

Also, their secret salad dressing is loaded with garlic and to die for.

I second/third the Le Dezaley.

What's that Adler fondue place like on the Niederdorf? You can smell the raclette when walking past...

I've had fondue now three times at Paul's Chäs Stübli on Tramstrasse in Oerlikon. While I can't fault the very hospitable owner, the very courteous staff or indeed their fondue (one of the times we ordered a special which consisted of a mixture of seven cheeses), I would warn that if you order Raclette, (or at least did so last December) the melting is done for you in the kitchen. You are thus presented with plates of melted cheese as you request them. Sort of knocks most of the fun out of it for me.

I don't have a problem with having the restaurant melt the raclette for me, indeed it can be great when done in front of a wood-burning fireplace. My problem with having raclette at restaurants is that the service is always so slow that you only get a couple of plates before everyone else is done with their fondue. Then you feel like a pig or you're holding up the meal if you want some more...hardly à discrétion IMO. That's why I've given up having raclette except at home or friends' homes.

Desperately searching fondue for Friday, tried all the above and fully booked. Does anyone have other suggestions? Dont mind how small or even a bit further out of Zurich.
