Good bars with cheap beer in city? Any tips?

Hi all - sorry if this sounds like an odd post. We're new to Zurich, and are finding the difference between the price of a beer in certain bars / areas, something very new to us. So in Ireland the price ranges by maybe 10-20% for the most part. But for example on Saturday we paid 6CHF for a large beer, then 9 cHF in another bar.

Just looking for some tips of good bars in the city which sell beer at a decent price.

Cheers
G

Yep....... very new

Beer in Zurich starts at "expensive", and then moves up in price trough "absolutely unreasonable" to "I just can't afford it"

The fact that you found a Large beer for 6chf is remarkable.

The cheapest beer I know of is at the 'old tram' bar at the bottom end of the "Ober Letten" along the Limmat River.
It's only open during the summer, is an outdoor thing (so weather dependant), and for a few francs you get a luke warm flat beer in a plastic cup...... mmmmmmm
(Lucky the weather is nice)

Cabaret Voltaire offers surprisingly 'cheap' beverages. It's located in Niederdorf in Zurich, so it's quite central too.

They also have 6 or 7 different types of absinthe, for when you've knocked back 11 cheap beers and need a grand finale.

El Lokal has a decent selection of bottled beers, there are a couple around the CHF5 mark. Included is the price of supping them sitting next to the river, s'rather nice.

Yep, the Vollmoon beer at El Lokal is 5chf....... but it's only a small beer.

For the volume of beer, I still think it's a good deal though.

The River side at El Lokal is a great afternoon as well.

You could probably get a rat to p&%s in a can for less and it would taste about the same

I'd imagine Strauss right on the corner of Militär Langstrasse would be around 6chf now. Last time I visited it was a couple of years ago and the beer was 5.20. However, be warned, the clientele are, well, interesting.

I have never really met a beer I dont like (Bud and fosters being an exception) and I am tellin ya the Prix beer is a miserable chemical infused excuse of a drink fit only for alcoholics and teenagers who play loud, tinny music on their phones

See I've been doing a lot of my drinking outside the city in Kloten / Oerlikon, so maybe thats why I'm getting confused!

In other news - had a few cans of Lowenbrau which we found v. cheap in the supermarket, and I was actaully surprised. Ireally liked it!!! So cheap beer at home sorted.. next step, find bar with cheap drink

Seeing as the OP lives in Meilen, he should head the opposite direction to Rapperswil and get the best beer in Switzerland at the bar of the Rappi Bierfactory, I can't remember the exact price but it's less than 4 chufs a glass. beware though, it is so drinkable (unlike the stuff you normally find around here) that you end up drinking twice what you planned!

The above mentioned Strauss, Gotthard also on Langstrasse, Hooters Helvetiaplatz... there's plenty of places where large beers are around 6-6.50! Do not go to Irish/English/expat pubs for cheap beers though.

At most "traditional" looking places (/watering holes) the clientele is very price sensitive.

How about getting a decent job which pays well and then you can go out and drink as much as you can handle, anytime, anywhere!

Note that the bar is only open Wed and Fri evenings and Saturday afternoon and early evenings. You could do worse than putting the 17th September in your diary for the last Ploughmans Lunch of 2011
