Vegetarian restaurants in Lausanne area?

Hi--We are looking for veggie/vegan restaurants, with any type of food, Asian, indian, Italian, whole foods... We moved from the UK and visit Canada often, so we are missing places like Fresh and Cranks. Any ideas or recommendations? We can't eat cheese and salad, pizza and pasta all the time when we go out!
Also, any great stores around Lausanne for ingredients like soy mock meat etc?

Re: Vegetarian restaurants in Lausanne area?

Hello, we have to admit that the choices are limited here... :-(

The Nil Bleu and the Couscous (as per the previous post) has some Veg. options.

For Veg take away try http://www.dhanyaa.com/en/home.htm it is behind the station if you have not discovered it yet :-)

For Salad and soup (normally only vege) try

le Petit-Bar

rue Pont-Bessières 1
1005 Lausanne

Phone:* 021 323 53 59

as you see below there is not much choice here... :-(

Most of the time we end up cooking at home.. so let us know if you want to come over :-)

Re: Vegetarian restaurants in Lausanne area?

The lucky folk of Lausanne have their very own burger chain 'Holy Cow' which does a range of tasty veggie burgers.

I also like 'Abyssinia' on Rue du Valentin. Friendly staff and good veggie options.

'Bosphore' does seriously good falafel.

Re: Vegetarian restaurants in Lausanne area?

I've been in Lausanne for 3 years, and unfortunately veggie restaurants are non-existent here, except for a small Indian take-out place by the train station.

However, Cafe de Grancy on av. du Rond Point 1 always has 2 items on their vegetarian sections, and usually 1 of their pasta dishes is vegetarian. Not a good choice for vegan though.

I also go to Le Côté Jardin restaurant at the Lausanne Palace Hotel. They have a small vegetarian section, and their appetizer buffet has a good selection of veggie items. I usually get their "appetizer, dessert and cheese buffet" for a filling and interesting dinner.

Re: Vegetarian restaurants in Lausanne area?

Chez Rony has a vegetable plate with rice done Bengali style (3 veggie dishes, usually lentils or "ratatouille" and a third option, like aubergines or cauliflower). I try to limit my meat intake and get the veggie plate every time I go there.

I'm pretty sensitive to vegetable dishes made with meat stock and my digestive system tells me these are veg only

I'm not sure if this will classify as being helpful or advertising but here goes, it's intended to be helpful.

I'm a private chef, basically I go to peoples homes and cook really good food for them. Basically this gives people a fine dinning experience in the comfort of their own home. I love cooking vegetarian food so if you can't find a decent restaurant and fancy having someone coming in and cooking a dinner party for you give me a shout.

Sounds interesting. Do you have a website or a menu to give us an idea of what you may serve and the price range? Thanks.

my webpage is under construction I have just realised it focuses almost entirely on fish and game so probably not useful to you.

I don't know what kind of food you like so I have come up with a sample menu based on what I would like to eat tonight. It's a traditional five course meal. I can also make a feast, where, rather than having a first course and second course, I fill the table with lots of different dishes for you to share, I find this works best with Ottolenghi style food.

Canapes -

Goat's cheese and tomato chilli jam on brioche toast
Olive tapenade on slow roasted tomato and basil foccaccia

Starter

Pumpkin soup (a Raymond Blanc recipe made with Sauternes) served with croutons

Main Course

Filled courgettes with ricotta and toasted almonds and tomato sauce (Cranks) with pommes Anna, herb salad.

Pudding

Plum frangipani tart with plum sauce and Gruyere cream

Coffee and petit fours

I would wash up and clean the kitchen before leaving.

For six people I would charge you a flat rate for my time plus the cost of ingredients - I estimate that this would cost 400 chf and there would probably be leftovers to nibble on the next day.

Obviously what it would be possible for me to make would be partially dependent on the space and equipment available in your kitchen but I am used to improvising.

All the best

Hugh
