Restaurant tip: Brunnen

Have you ever wondered where you will eat dinner when you are driving back from Italy or Tessin to Zurich or Zug? If you are driving back on a Sunday you've probably been stuck much longer than you planned to be waiting for the Gotthard, and if you've just come back recently you've discovered the lovely road works on the northern side of the Gotthard which add another 45 minutes to your journey (so even if you take the Gotthard pass you'll still be stuck as everything comes down to 1 lane afterwards). So my point is that you may want to make alternative arrangements for dinner.

Chances are you might pass the Brunnen turn-off depending on the route you have chosen. Take this turn-off and you'll very quickly find yourself with a reasonable choice of restaurants that are open - also late on a Sunday evening. We were surprised at the choice and quality of the restaurants, and they all look out over the lake.

You can probably guess that I am usually somewhat underwhelmed at the average restaurant experience, so you can imagine my surprise when the Mexican restaurant we selected actually turned out to be quite nice! Fans of Mexican restaurants will know what I'm talking about - they are usually just absolutel rubbish aren't they? Service was friendly, the food was of good quality and the prices semi-reasonable.

So next time you are doing the trip back my tip is to stop and eat in Brunnen, it's well worth it.

The place we ate at is called Mezcalito Bodega and Bar, you can find their website at www.mexikaner.ch.

Do you have another tip for a place to stop on the way back to Zug or Zurich? Share it with us.
