When in Bern - what to do and what to see?

Hello and good evening.

I'm going to Bern(e) for the first time ever (but only for the day unfortunately) and would like some suggestions about what to see & do (some insider information perhaps?).

I'm sorry if this has been covered in another thread but I couldn't find it.

Thanks in advance.

Hi! We just spent the day in Bern today and had fun climbing up the tower of the Münster of Bern. We also went to see the Einstein museum which was fairly small but enjoyable nonetheless. Hope you have fun!

You may get some ideas from 36 Hours in Bern, Switzerland.

It was all a bit sudden really, it'll be today Sunday (and it's raining). Perhaps not the best day to see the city in all its glory but maybe from a different perspective?

Anything and everything really. No shopping probably on a Sunday?

Thanks.

Bit gloomy in the rain because of the colour of the stone... but at least all the arcades mean that you can stroll around a fair bit without getting wet.

Go to the tourist information in the main station and do an ipod city tour. Highly recommended and mostly under cover

Re: When in Bern - what to do and what to see?

Sorry, it is raining in Bern, but it was also raining for the whole drive back from Aargau last night.

Even so, you may enjoy walking through the covered walkways of the old town (Lauben), have a gander at the Bundesmaus, coffee or a bite down on the river at SCHWELLENMÄTTELI.

It's an inside day, so check out the Kunsthalle, Bern Historical Museum (Heltetiaplatz), or the Paul Klee Zentrum. Any one of these can take up the better part of a day

It may be too late, but the "Altes Tram Depot" is a brewery with
its own beer. The food is also pretty good.

Worth it for the beer alone, food has been a bit hit and miss on my last couple of visits.

The Klee museum close to Berne was something I liked a lot to visit.

Check out the cathedral - it is a very impressive building and with the aid of the Switzerland iphone app (free), you get a good insight to the carving at the front door- The Last Judgement.

I've said it before about Geneva, but it works for Bern too. Once you've seen the covered arcades of the old town, get yourself down to the Bahnhof and get on a train that has "Zurich" on the front and sides.

Zurich is neurosis on steroids, I lived there for ten years.

...Bern, on the other hand................is staid.

Having lived in Bern and Zürich, I still enjoy a visit to Bern just to
walk around the city and experience a bit of culture.

If you want to have a few beers with the mates, Zürich is
a better choice.
