I went to Friend's Corner (Josefstrasse 140) on Saturday to pick up a lunch curry takeaway. It was my first time there. I ordered the Buryani (how it was spelt on the menu) which was a selection of 2 vegetarian curries (aubergine and lady fingers) and a lamb curry with saffron scented basmati rice.

It cost around 13 francs and it really was excellent. I was really surprised by the quality and thoroughly enjoyed my meal. And the greatest thing about it was that it was well flavoured and spicy!!! Just the way I like it. I've been here almost 3 years and it's the first time I have enjoyed a Tamil/Indian curry takeaway as most of the places I go to tend to water down the spice. I wish I had gone before. It's become my instant favourite.

I have to add that the portion was massive. I had 2 happy meals from that 1 takeaway.

Have any of you been to Nimmi? It's right opposite Friend's Corner and also looked good. Is the food similar or is one better than the other?

Well, if you had curry with whatever you got then it is definitely not Biriyani (or Buriyani as you mentioned). You get a little gravy with the real Biriyani but that is nor curry. Anyways, all good if you liked it

Ahh.. this conversation reminded me of authentic Hydrabadi Biryani i had ages ago... I wonder if one gets a good biryani somewhere in Zurich??

Friends corner , i used to go with my friends,, cannot complain about foods. My wife had Buriyani once at friends corner but it is not real Buriyani,, but it is ok.

Yes I do realize that it's not a Hyderabadi biryani (I make my own when I have the time), and that it's only saffron scented rice with a few curries, but it's really good, especially for 13 chf. What I love about it is that when I ask them to make it spicy, they do and the portion is massive.

I picked up another takeaway yesterday and ordered the same thing. It was great again. I ate half of it last night and am looking forward to the remainder tonight. I had walked by Nimmi as well but the food in the display looked better at Friend's Corner. Mind you, it was already 3pm, so lunch service was already over.

Next time round I want to try the Kottu Roti as it seems to be a very popular Sri Lankan dish and looks spicy.

niklin, since preparing biryani is quite a time consuming and laborious process, I doubt that Hyderabadi biryani can be prepared to order in a restaurant within an acceptable waiting time. You would have to wait too long. Unless, of course, they already prepare several portions in advance and serve it as the special of the day.

I love Friends Corner! You have to try the Kottu Roti, its basically different vegetables with a roti (indian flatbread) and egg, all fried up together and then chopped. You can also add beef, lamb or chicken if you like. It also costs 12.- and you get a huge serving. I also like to take a curry, you always get it with lots of different sides, like eggplant, okra, tomato salad, daal...it's fantastic. I go there a lot and have never been disappointed. Never been to Nimmi, but have heard some bad stuff, the food is not supposed to be as tasty as friends corner. But as said, never been there.

Went to Friend's Corner again and enjoyed another lovely Buryani.

I really got to try Kottu Roti next time!

We had lunch once at Nimmi and really enjoyed it, but definitely Friend's Corner will make a nice lunch suggestion for one of our Friday "A Taste of..." next year
