Good morning all. I am in the mood for really good Chinese food. Does anybody have any recomondations for the Basel area? It can also bee across the boarder in France or Germany. Looking forward to your responses.

It's very difficult. I like Xiao Lu (小露露) on Elizabethenstrasse opposite the McGuiness pub, but unless you go on a weekday lunchtime for the buffet it is expensive. But so is every restaurant here, really.

French side has nothing authentic. Not tried everything on the German side, but a place called Hong Kong (or HK restaurant, or something else where HK is the main title) in Lorrach wasn't bad. Decent value but not exactly authentic.

You're going to struggle. I've said this before, but it's a pity as the Asian stores in Basel sell the right ingredients to make authentic food. I can only assume the Chinese population isn't high enough to warrant the effort. Apart from Xiao Lu. Nearest place to get a real chinatown is probably Amsterdam. Quickest is London. Cheapest to get to ... not sure. Maybe some of the places in the "Vietnamese town" in Paris 13th.

If not Chinese then any other fun, great and good food in the basel erea and across the border.It could be Indian, Fusion, Thai etc......

The nearest could be in Zurich - Ya Ke. It has a website if you want details. The chef is a Taiwanese who'll even whip up home-style Chinese food if you ask him. He and his wife are very friendly. Best Chinese food I've eaten in CH.

I haven't tried a lot of places yet but so far, Xiao Lu is the best I've found. It's not anywhere close to authentic but it is tasty (which is a lot more than I can say for other places) and they deliver (via VeloGourmet).

Golden Dragon, near Basel university(1 tram stop from spalentor), is tasty !!

One of my fav Chinese restaurant is near SBB, its bit expensive. The name is : Fojito, Hochstrasse

I feel pity that almost all chinese restaurants do not offer the typical chinese vegetables. The vegetable materials they use are very common from european supermarkets. It's always those few kinds vegetables. The bamboo shoots and mushrooms are from cans... it smells/tastes strange.

I tried several chinese restaurants in Basel:
Xiaolu's (dishes out of menu cards are perfect! dishes ordered from card is so so. More or less the taste is already adapted to local.)
Hongkong near Messeplatz (first time was really good, but later several times i do not feel so special anymore.)
Hongkong in Weil am Rhein mainstreet (service people do not speak/understand mandarin. 1 or 2 dishes from their special offers are good. Other dishes are ok.)
Lotus near germany/swiss boarder (owner is shanghainese? If you look for Shanghainese taste, maybe it's a idea place. Dishes are akind "sour & sweet".)
If you look for general asian food, "5 starts" in Loerrach is also o.k.
I think "Lily" asia restaurant is also not bad - fresh cooked; - quick service. You can also order it to door.

It's sad there are no chinese style "wantan"/ "Jiaozi"/ "noodle soup" snack restaurants; no hotpot restaurants. T_T

I tried a few times in this japanese noodle restaurant. The cooker is not really japanese...
Soup is sometimes really salty to death. (People say the cooker is in love. That's why it's very salty. he he)
Anyway, I must say this type of restaurant is really good alternative to chinese, italy, swiss or french restaurants here.

I really have to disagree.. asia 5 star is terrible, the place is unclean and food is swimming in oil, the buffet section is covered in grease - obviously its just wiped down with a wet cloth and not cleaned properly.

everything has a grease/oil feel to it.

Oh how I miss a 'British' Chinese. It was the first think I ate when I went back the other week. Crispy beef... nom nom nom.

We did try Mr. Wongs near Barfuserplatz the other day and it was pretty bad (IMO). Has anyone come across a Chinese yet that is similar to a 'British' one?

You mean a random stab at Cantonese food but swimming in pineapple and a sweet tomato-puree based sauce? Probably whatever the one is called near Spalentor, almost next to Mandir (Indian).

According to google maps it's called Fu Chang Huynh. I've not been, precisely because I believe it will be similar to a "British" one
