Hi all,

I need to organize New Years eve this year. This time my boyfriend's parents are celebrating it with us, so we would like to do something special (go out for diner).

I checked this "Silvester-Schiff auf dem Zürichsee" but it is 300CHF per person! I personally thing this is overpriced, so if any of you know about alternatives or want to share their plans, it would be very helpful.

This our first NYE in Zurich and were planning a dinner and then to the lake for the fireworks. Trying to find a restaurant is hard work though, everything weve tried is either full or way overpriced....

There will be loads of restaurants taking advantage of the fact that its NYE and charging an arm and leg for their menus. I remember the Dolder last year charging almost 500CHF per head including drinks. Cant run away from it.

My suggestion is to cook a great meal at home and wander down to the lake around 11pm with champers to watch the fireworks.

If you want to spend, the restaurant up on Uetliberg has great views of the lake and their own fireworks at midnight. Hiltl will also have its own NYE meal/package but definitely less expensive than these restaurants.

January 1st and 2nd are holidays here. I would go for a meal earlier or later, and then have a family evening on New Year's Eve.

It is a restaurant featuring traditional Swiss cuisine in Rapperswil, the quality is excellent, the portions big, and the owners Andreas and Angelika are lovely people. The menu and website are in Swiss German - funny when you read it - but the owners speak English. At least, with my poor German and their good English we managed to understand each other

I would give them a call to see if they are open and if so, if they are doing special menus for New Year's Eve. I know they are doing something around Christmas for CHF 60 per person or so.

I recommend this place without hesitations, I loved their food and company. Also, you will be in Rapperswil, which is a lovely place to be - you can walk around the old town and also stroll by the lake.

if youre clever you dont choose belvue area to watch the fireworks. its overrun by people and stressy walking around there. try to walk up from höschgasse and see if further down there is a nice spot you can watch it relaxed.

going to a restaurant will be hopelessly overpriced and maybe even booked out by now. i say cook at home. if raclette or fondue hasnt been the PILaw course on xmas, set this up.

PCLC: Going to the lake to watch the fireworks will be awesome, I experienced it in 2009/2010 and it was spectacular. Last year, we camped out outside the operahouse in Sydney for 14 hours just to catch a 12 minute firework celebration at midnight but lemme tell you it doesn't come close to the fireworks in Zurich on NYE!
Although I agree with summerrain and flow23, cook something really nice and then make your way there. That's what we're gon do!

Swis: I would suggest a nice dinner at home, like summerrain and flow23 said and then going down to the lake with a nice bottle of bubbly!

As you all seem to be in Zurich the answer seems obvious!!

All make a dish, bring some champers and celebrate together - then all go down to the lake to watch the fireworks!!

Hmm not a bad idea but I have my parents with me and they are getting on a bad so I was thinking somewhere away from the madding crowd.

Whatever everyone decides to do in the end .... remember, it's not an authentic Swiss Old Years Eve, without Dinner for One.

This is an interesting observation I have seen the Sydney fireworks on many occassions including the year 2000. I have also seen Zurich's fireworks. You are correct that the fireworks in Zurich and Sydney don't compare however Zurich's fireworks would struggle to equal 1 of the 3 barges used in Sydney. Ziurich has a lake Sydney has a massive bridge that is used to support the show.

Sydney is the benchmark for NYE fireworks. I admit bias, yes but Zurich's fireworks don't come close to Sydney.
