Pizza restaurant recommendation [Zurich]

My wedding anniversary is coming up and we have this weird tradition of having pizza for dinner - Since we are now celebrating it in Zürich can anyone recommend a good pizza (Italian) joint in the city centre - possible near Hauptbahnhof. If possible NY style or Chicago style would be a really special treat. Any recommendations are appreciated.

Re: Pizza restaurant recommendation

Sam's NY pizza is really really close to HB - but I don't know the name of the street

Go up Bahnhofstrasse, right at McDonalds, then right again at Globus and it's on the corner

(edit - I know this because I walked past it 8 times in several different directions last night trying to find the 0815 bar )

Re: Pizza restaurant recommendation

What were you doing in the 0815 bar, you little devil ? You were either on a date or making sure the gents toilet really does have a floor area of 4.5sqm as advertised. A good sound system in there by the way.

Re: Pizza restaurant recommendation [Zurich]

The best place to get pizza near the HB is not Sam's. Their pizza isn't so stellar. Although I do remember they have a thicker crust.

Go to Il golosone. It's delicious, some of the best in town IMHO.

Uraniastrasse 20
8001 Zürich Kreis 1

The service isn't stellar, but since you'll be going there with a family the point I'm guessing isn't to get in and get out as fast a possible.

Re: Pizza restaurant recommendation [Zurich]

Golossone may have great pizza but the waiters clearly were trained in the "really unfriendly and snooty" school of service and it can get dreadfully smoky.

For italian style my preferred places are either Molino's or Santa Lucia, if you want a really evil thick crust pizza, a Domino's has just opened on my road (ten minutes from HB on foot), if you can find a romantic venue to have them deliver it to you, that could impress even more than just a standard restaurant.

As chemgoddess said, Sam's thick crust pizza ist not the best and the waitresses in the very short white skirts and bobby socks are maybe not the atmosphere you're looking for. Thick crust pizzas are just not very popular here, as the demise of the once-featured Pizza Hut testifies...

ETA: There seems to be a place called the New York Food Company near Central, at least that's what my flatmate says, they do pizza...

Re: Pizza restaurant recommendation [Zurich]

my favorite pizza place in town is Michelangelo's in the Gertrudstrasse: http://zuri.net/adr/18089/restaurant...chelangelo.htm

it's a real italian place and it's not in the immediate vicinity from the HB (10 min on Tram 3, get off at Zypressenstrasse), so I'm not sure it's what you're looking for, but I figured I'd post it for further reference.

Their pizzas are the best (my italian colleagues rave about it), their service is very good and personal, and their prices very reasonable (17-25 CHF for a big pizza, if I'm remembering correctly). Only negative thing I can think about is the neon lighting in the place, not exactly the romantic venue you might have in mind for an anniversary.

Re: Pizza restaurant recommendation [Zurich]

I've never had anybody be snooty to me at Il Golosone. Poor service, Yes. Rude, No. Sorry to hear you have.

New York Food Company has okay Pizza although quite expensive (CHF 50 for a large), they're sandwiches are awesome.

Re: Pizza restaurant recommendation [Zurich]

I want to thank all of you for your recommendations. I would thank each of you, but I can't figure out how to do that yet. I am going to try Santa Lucia - I stopped by there this weekend, they have a wood burning stove and the staff was extremely nice. They even let me take a menu home. I'll let you know how the pizza tasted.

Re: Pizza restaurant recommendation [Zurich]

Franco's in Oerlikon is also pretty good, but home delivery usually arrives cold Same owner as Don Leone where the pizzas though good, gets overshadowed by the pasta IMO.

Re: Pizza restaurant recommendation [Zurich]

Don Leone's pizza is just fine, the pasta is super though.
Santa Lucia is a good choice.
My all time favourite was "Ciao" in Helvetiaplatz, but now is turned into some american franchise

This thread needs revival. Please tell me the best pizza restaurants in your opinion in Zurich, preferably near Altstetten or close to the city.

Re: Pizza restaurant recommendation [Zurich]

Santa Lucia isn't bad. Also Dieci has OK bases with nice smokey flavour, but the toppings are a bit of a let down. In Napels I had plain tomato pizza with shaved rucola - the taste still lingers....it cost 1 euro.

Re: Pizza restaurant recommendation [Zurich]

I have tried Santa Lucia and whilst OK do not really blow my mind. Is it impossible to find superb pizzas in Switzerland? I am almost inclined to make them myself at home.

Rosso

Best thin crust wood oven baked pizza ever.

Bring cash (as I don't think they take any plastic) and, as another EFer mentioned watch out you don't trip on the Freitag bags when you walk around.

Hi zwissmiss

What are the approximate sizes and prices? The website does not seem to provide this info for me, if you care to assist

Re: Pizza restaurant recommendation [Zurich]

The size varies depending on the pizzaiolo(a) (person who makes pizza), the heat of the oven, the type of wood used, the weather outside...etc.

All seriousness aside - usually one pizza is for one person, don't be shocked when they bring it to you and it is extending over the edge of the plate, this is a THIN CRUST pizza as mentioned previously, you will be able to eat it all.

I think a margherita costs around 18CHF - more if you want buffalo mozzarella instead of regular mozzarella. Prices go up to around 25CHF if you want special things like porcini mushrooms.
There are not that many different types of pizza, simple, with top quality ingredients is the highlight here and they usually have a seasonal pizza.

Wash it down with a Turbinenbräu - heaven.

I forgot to mention - ROSSO is not a Pizzeria, it is a modern funky restaurant with down to earth good food, mostly locally sourced, you WILL need a reservation unless you want to try your luck at getting a seat at the bar (you can eat there too). If you are more than two persons, you should really reserve.
