Babu’s Bakery & Coffeehouse - Zurich

If you wanna spoil yourself wih a great cup of coffee where you can also find fresh cakes & pies, you should definitely go to Babu's. Their Cappuccino is great... (They are also open on Sundays...)

What I also like about this place is their decoration and the elegant cups & plates...

Absolutely! I agree 100%. Babu's is adorable and cozy and their coffee is fantastic.

Next time you're there, try the sandwiches. They are EXCELLENT! Truly. I had one with prosciutto, sun dried tomatoes, parmesan, rucola and some sort of aioli on baguette. Delicious!

I can third that too

My cousin took me there as it's owned by the mother of one of her friends! The brownies there are absolutely delicious. I found the hot chocolate to be a tad too milky for my taste, but my sister thought it was perfect.

It has a really nice atmosphere (and service) too which for me is almost as important as the quality of the food and drink.

We were there for brunch on a Sunday.

In the beginning slightly confusing that you have to order and pay (in advance) at a counter -- feels like Starbucks -- but in the end they serve you at your table and the food as well as the coffee is excellent.

Will try lunch sometime as well, I was told they have amazing salads.

I've had lunch there a few times, and while the food tastes good the service leaves something to be desired.

Why can't they have table service? You have to line up to order, there's 2 lines so it's not clear which one to go to, pay for it ahead of time and tell them you're sitting at "the big table in the back" (they've recently added table numbers) - and what do you do if you want dessert and coffee? Take it all at once and the coffee gets cold? The decor is great, but I feel like the concept is lost and people who are trying to manage it don't have restaurant experience.

It could be one of the best places in Zurich to eat and have coffee if they changed their serving style.

It definitely beats the Pain Quotidien that was there before. Awesome cakes. But good point about the coffee/self service though!

I think it is all to do with overhead. If you have table service, the ration is around 6 tables per waiter, so how many more people they have to employ? can they afford to charge the same if they have table service?

I personally do not mind self service, as I can order and get what I want rather than wait for someone to come and take order. It might be the same amount of time but the feeling of "just 2 person ahead of me" than "I don't know where the waiter is and how long would this be now?" then you have to wait for someone to come and give you a bill!

with the customer service being bashed in CH so much, I actually think self service may not be a bad thing. I once was in a restaurant for a leaving do and we started at 7, some of us are late so 7:30 when everyone arrived. The waiter did not bother to come and ask for order until 8 (despite he taken the extra order for drinks), then the food did not appear until 8:30.. on and on.. took another half an hour to pay at the end because he cannot work out who has what. So for a school night that a meal taken 4 hours is crap.
