Sometimes all you want is a long talk over a lovely cup of Kenyan tea with scones in a warm and cosy cafe. Don't tell the internet but my place of choice is Kafi Dihei on Zurlindenstrasse. British-Swiss owners and an Irish cook help with the sense of familiar. Ask for the clotted cream, as well as home made lemon curd.

Do charity, for example in Bern the Inselspital accepts volunteers, for sure there is something similar in Zurich, you can volunteer only 4 hours a month, seeing others in bigger troubles makes you feel lucky and forget about your problems.
Amen. Focusing on others takes away the focus on ourselves, which is always good anyway.

Quick fix: Saturday breakfast at 1pm at Maison Blunt (try the oriental breakfast - CHF 20 and delicious, with feta puree, hummous, olives, gipfeli, jam, honey, butter, cucumber salad with mint and lemon, bread and focaccia at will, yoghurt with fresh fruits, and dried fruits).

Long-term fix: a volunteering trip. If you PM me, I can recommend you a couple of locations.

Cheers to your friend for finding her happy self again, and cheers to you for being a friend!

Take your friend to see Lambchop play in Zurich's Kaufleuten.

This may sound strange, but the best solution for the blues is actually not fun, it is touching reality in a really tough place. It adds a lot of perspective.

Try a poor, rural area in the 3rd world (a relatively safe place).

This of course applies in case your friend doesn't have any VERY REAL problems of his/her own.

May I comment here,

It is always possible to do charity anywhere you can, it might be easier in 3rd world - but you will enjoy it more when you spend more effort finding where and how you can help in a country like Switzerland.

It may bring you surprise when you offer help and you hear them here saying no thanks we don't need it, but once you find a place you can help you will really feel more proud than what you did in poor countries.

I also believe "bzz" by trying to help her colleague is doing charity, and I think her colleague should be lucky having someone with such attitude arround.

Note: I am telling this based upon my personal experience helping in terribly poor areas and in what I can call luxurious areas.

I wasn't suggesting to do charity to anyone. I was talking about observing and acquiring perspective.

Living in one of the richest countries in the world makes you lose the notion of what are real and unimportant problems.

Re: Depressed friend: need ideas for fun / unique activity / restaurant

If it wasn't winter time, I'd recommend getting out of the city:
http://www.nationalpark.ch/go/en/visit/accommodation/

Drive to the Swiss National Park, hike to the Chamanna Cluozza hut, enjoy some of the most beautiful nature in Switzerland, great dinner and then spending the night in the the hut. Next day, hike out again.

Nothing like a good hike to clear the mind... and this really is a very, very beautful part of Switzerland.

Go to the cafe "La Stanza" on Bleicherweg 10, it's one of the happiest places I know.. Preferably early (the croud enters around 12).. Just sit, enjoy an amazing cappucino and relax.

Re: Depressed friend: need ideas for fun / unique activity / restaurant

I've always found keeping occupied and getting out into the surroundings (I miss the sea!) help when the blues strike.
I'm not very helpful on specific places in Zurich, but well done you for taking the time to be there for your friend when they most need it... apart from any activities/distractions, that will mean an awful lot.
