We had a great meal right in town centre recently- in the restaurant above the tram ticket office at Place Pury, right in centre of town. Just can't remember the name right now- great food and great service. I had no idea it existed despite growing up here.
Le Cercle National.

We ate there a few times when we first moved here and the food was good but we had a couple of awful meals the last two times we went there so we haven't been back since. Admittedly it was a couple of years ago now but two bad experiences in a row really put us off the place.
Maybe we'll give it another try.

You should try Le Cardinal which is always a sure choice.

They do a fantastic hand-cut steak tartare and their midday menus are great value for money (a good place to have lunch after the Saturday market shop).

The bistro recently won the 2017 "Historical Restaurant" distinction from ICOMOS for its original style.
We love the Cardinal and the food is always excellent.

The friends we went with go regularly and they are very fussy (and can afford the best) - so I am surprised. We said we would definitely go again.

Since noone seem to mention it then do try Mö (http://www.le-mo.ch/) its a pretty awesome and unique (for Neuchatel area) meat restaurant.

Also if you are into Sushi http://www.bambousushibar.ch/neuchatel/ is decent.

And if you are in for some good beers, international clientele and good bar food then The Cerf (http://www.cafeducerf.ch/)

Mö is pricy and pretentious and not that good on the service front.

For really fantastic meat you should go to La Charrue in Vilars. Why do I say that? Because the patron used to be a butcher and he only has the best cuts. The price is very reasonable and you can even choose you lump of meat if you want. Only downer is that the place has a decidedly 1970's (Delboy) look and feel, so not where you want to take your belle on a first date.

Le Cerf is great for a few beers and the atmosphere is fantastic when there's a big game on the TV, but the food is awfully greasy you are better off going for a kebab opposite!

you must have been unlucky - been there three times and I always feel it is one of the few places in Neuchatel where you actually get service

It used to be (I know, in the early fifties ) that the Buffet de la Gare (in Neuchâtel and everywhere else) has a reputation for good food and reasonable prices. Is it still true?

Re: where do people eat out in Neuchatel??

Sadly the bistro at Neuchâtel station was transformed into 50% McD and 50% Caffé Spettacolo a long time ago, but I remember when you could get a great steak with fries and salad there.

The old railway bistros don't make enough money to pay the higher rents that McDs and other fast foods can. Le buffet de la gare at Lausanne station didn't quite make it's centenary and closed last December, to be replaced by a soon to be opening fast food outlet.

Re: where do people eat out in Neuchatel??

There is a nice Chinese restaurant at the railway station in Neuchatel, just across the road from the cafe. It's called Mei-Jing. Opens for dinner at 5.30 pm. They do takeaway too.
