Tibits & Hiltl ( prices in vegetarian restaurants )

Today I had lunch with my wife at Tibits Basel , with a couple fruit juice the bill was around 70CHF

Then the women at the Bio shop in France informs me that they do not use hardly any bio products in those restaurants.

can this be right?, would any on here know, how can they justify charging so much for the meals?

I am a little bit shocked here as I use Hiltl in Zurich for all my city meetings

Did you pay the bill? If so, that's how they justify it - because you thought it worth it

That is my point exactly I do not mind paying the price but thought that it was bio if it is not then no way is the food worth this money

I mean, I ask because, you know, one might find more value in the former than the latter, and that might affect the perception of the price, you know...

Why did you post the question here then, when you know the guy who runs it?

And seriously, chf 70 for lunch for two does not seem outrageous at all for a Swiss city, organic or not.

I still need to confirm this and none here have so far, and yes 70CHF for 2 plate of non bio veggies is crazy

Re: Tibits & Hiltl

Doesnt seem too expensive to me, i think you said 'almost' chf70, so a few chf less, then you had fruit juices each, guessing that takes chf12 off? (not much of an idea on fruit juice costs) so that leaves about 55ish chf for 2, about GBP35
so 17.50GBP each, in Zurich, for a restaurant meal, not cheap, but not thread worthy?
(clearly I've been here too long to write that!)

Sorry, You said around chf70 not almost , so i guess it could be a bit more than my breakdown, did it include a tip?

But for non bio no,I checked their website and they just avoid answering that question most people who go there assume like me it is bio

Why? It's a vegetarian restaurant, that's all. Burger King serves burgers; I don't automatically assume they're "bio" burgers. And in any case, "bio" is a somewhat loose term, to put it mildly.

Re: Tibits & Hiltl

This reminds me of my real "aha" moment in Switzerland. I went to the tourist office in my town to ask if they could recommend some affordable places to eat. In my mind I was thinking less than 10CHF. The employee looked at me completely genuine and said, "So something around 30CHF?" I mumbled my nevermind, and wandered out, dazed and thinking "Grocery stores it is. Always."

I thought I would adjust. It's been two years and I still haven't. I did learn to treat myself with crepes - delicious and affordable! (And please don't anyone talk about how we've enjoyed our non-existent swiss salary, I just can't take it anymore.)

Re: Tibits & Hiltl

Bio is the biggest marketing scam in history (well ignoring a few others like global warming). I'm all for in season produce and good husbandry, but paying a premium for the virtues of bio strikes me as the equivalent of turning your back on modern medicine. When there's a hefty premium for it.. dont even ask my view.

Ahh, you've not been in Switzerland long, have you?

Tibits is unique in that it's the only vegetarian buffet style restaurant in Switzerland, or at least, it was when it first opened, I'm unsure if anyone has noticed it's success and jumped on the bandwagon.

I do not recall anything about being bio, only that they do stress how FRESH it is. Given the cost differences at the grocery store for bio vs regular, I tremble to think how expensive Tibits would be if it were all bio. As it is, the pricing structure is in line with the other restaurants in the area, as I'd think is only sensible from a business point of view.

It's a good thing you're vegan, if you were more like the rest of us, you'd have already choked on how expensive the food is, even at lowly McDonald's.
