| | | Mexican food shop in Zurich [& Mexican restaurants in Switzerland]
Hey All,
A few of the gang seemed interested in this info in the pub yesterday, so i thought it may be worth posting. There is apparently (according to my Mexican neighbour) a very good Mexican food shop in Zurich, near the Bahnhof. http://map.search.ch/8005/klingenstr.-33?poi=all
I will be going to get myself a sombrero later today.

This is a great store: they have the largest range of chili sauce in Zürich, something for everyone. They also have the most adorable saleswoman who'll flirt like crazy, daring you to try the 'stronger stuff'. Seems she only likes guys who like it spicy!
They also sell fresh tortillas and guacamole... |

Read the classifieds. Some of it is almost as intelligent as the exprats in Zürich group.

Wow! I feel closer to home than ever... they have a wider variety than I've ever seen...
The candy I saw in there almost made me cry... oh, those long-gone childhood times... playing hide and seek at lunchtime, breaking a pinata every birthday, going to the Corner Store instead of finishing the Solar System scale model... these candy, believe it or not, represent every Mexican's elementary school years...
Thank you very much for the post, Daniel! I'll buy you a basket of Miguelitos, paletas Coronado or Pulparindos, you've made my day! |

I'm looking forward to giving this place a try, I always heard the prices are high, but for dried black and pinto beans, they're not bad at all.

Okay, I'm a huge mexican food lover so this thread caught my attention. I'm not in Zurich often though so I checked online for other options and found http://www.mexiland.ch. Maybe it's my imagination, but it seems that the prices are too high. But, hey, it's available.
Anyone know of a good one in Basel? Or a good mexican food restaurant in Basel? I prefer American Mexican, Tex Mex, or South American Mexican to what I have found here so far. If there are any of those in restaurant form anywhere in Switzerland, I'd love to know. It'd be worth the trip!
Otherwise I just have to spend hours cooking - which is also worth it, but it's nice to be served some times .

I'm going to head down to Zurich one of these days and check out the shop.

Okay, I thought I'd been to all the mexican restaurants in Basel, but I just did a search and found this one. Has anyone tried it? If so, how was it? Restaurant Jumping Bean's American & Mexican-Cuisine

It's famous becasue it was the first 'different' restaurant, founded around 20 years ago. They've recently opened another restaurant in Küsnacht. Frankly, it's OK, though perhaps not what you may expect in Texicana...

I found this site ( http://www.elsol.ch/) while Googling for the El Maiz website...Mexican grocery in Basel.

We are from California, so this place is what we have been looking for. I am going to see if I can get them to order a few other things that we like.

fduvall - If you live in Zurich, I would recommend stopping into El Maiz ( http://www.elmaiz.ch/). I've never ordered online, but the shop has a very good selection.

Thanks for the tip. I have been in the store but did not realize that they have an online store. I actually live on Josefstrasse, so this is great!

When I asked for chips and salsa, the chips were the seasoned kind from Coop, and the salsa was actually Marinara sauce. If they can get away with this, I give up! | | | | | The Stars, and strips, is also an American bar, with fantastic food, they do a fantastic starter plate with very good chips, and salsa nothing like you can buy in the coop, chicken wings, onion rings, pickles, and another dip | | This user would like to thank Sutter for this useful post: | |

Yeah forget about Mexican in Zurich - the only thing that is somewhat ok is the meat, but guacamole, tortillas, salsa, nopalitos and tortilla chips make me want to cry (especially when I see the bill)...
.. however, El Tres Amigos is actually run by Mexicans and has good food (not Tex Mex) but good.. they apparently also have all-you can eat deals, but we have only been there once after a long hike and missed the time slot for that...
best Margaritas, steak and burger I have had in Europe so far are at Arizona in Urnaesch (also rather faraway for us Zurichers, but a good tip after a long hike in the Appenzell region).
