Geneva's blossoming burger scene

Sorry if this comes off as a bit of a promotional journalistic piece, but for as long as I've lived here in Geneva, one of the most common sources of complaints from ex-pats and locals has been lack of good hamburgers. There were some decent ones served at pubs, but inconsistently. When Burger King near Cornavin train station closed around 5-7 years back, it was actually treated as some kind of loss. That's how dire the situation was. (A Burger King eventually re-opened at the airport, for those who care)

Things started picking up a few years ago when Lausanne's famous Holy Cow burger joint opened around Plainpalais and finally brought good burgers to Geneva. A second location opened near Cornavin train station soon later. I find the burgers there pretty good, but during the last 2 years several other establishments opened that offer world-class burgers that I feel the need to inform people of.

Inglewood - locations near Uni-Mail/Plainpalais and Chene Bourg. Large variety of burgers with local meat and regular specials. You also get buffalo/bison burgers. Get reservations ahead of time because they're becoming victims of their own success.

FMR Bar - Near tram stop Palladium. Large selection of burgers, including vegetarian options and even lake perch filet "burgers". Their biggest burger is the FMR, a 360gr of meat monstrosity that will set you back 29 francs, but is totally worth it.

We now also have two burger trucks constantly on the move around Geneva, offering more basic and cheaper but nontheless tasty options. Check their sites for locations, but you'll regularly find them on Sundays at Plainpalais market (close to the southern corner by Uni Mail):

The Hamburger Foundation and BurgerQueens. The Hamburger Foundation offers simpler American-style burgers for 12-14 CHF that are really good. They're loaded with sauces and are soggy just like in the States, very tasty. BurgerQueens burgers run from 11 to 13 CHF and have more options with local ingredients like raclette cheese. I sampled both at the market today and slightly preferred BurgerQueens (cheaper, more options, bigger patties), but you can't go wrong with either. And, I must add, both trucks cook their burgers medium-rare, as it should be.

So just to say that we can officially stop complaining. Geneva's burger scene has become genuinely impressive. We've come a long way from a few years ago, when Holy Cow was seen as our savior. These days burger lovers in Geneva are spoilt for choice.

Edit: And I may have missed a few, so anyone who knows of other good burger establishments in the region, let us know!

Good idea to have mentioned them in one post.

Re: Geneva's blossoming burger scene

Excellent news! How about organizing a Geneva meet-up at one of these? After the recent welcome of our Northern EFer to Geneva turned into a very intimate affair, we need to show that we are not completely unsociable...

Inglewood at Pont d'Arve suits me, as I can scoot round from Meyrin without entering the lunchtime traffic hell of central Geneva.

Any other takers or alternative suggestions?

Re: Geneva's blossoming burger scene

A Geneva event sounds great. But I always say the concept of a "Geneva event" is the same as the concept of "silence". Say its name and it ceases to exist. But to avoid traffic, we can check when the burger trucks are closer to our areas. BurgerQueens passes at the Zone Industrielle de Meyrin.

One place I forgot: Le Calamar. They've been at it for a while and their burgers are not too shabby.

Re: Geneva's blossoming burger scene

I know it is a bit of a drive (albeit with fabulous scenery), but I absolutely loved Rando Burger in St. Cergue! Their Garlic Kiss Burger was my favorite, and I am longing for another one even though I have returned to the USA (which is otherwise known as "Burger Heaven"). Well worth a drive up the Jura to enjoy a fabulous burger-and-fries basket, IMO!

Re: Geneva's blossoming burger scene

Road Runner is fine I guess, but doesn't really compare anymore. I remember being borderline insulted by the size of their patties the last time I went. The burgers were McDo Happy-meal size, although with admittedly-better meat. Don't mean to put them down (chances are some owners or employees frequent this forum), but with the new competition on the scene they need to up their game.

Holy Cow is really a must as far as I'm concerned. We're having a second big one opening in Lausanne, yeah!

Hah, just found this, for French speakers, a guy actually runs a regional Burger Blog. Some other choices there.

Re: Geneva's blossoming burger scene

So.....?!! If i suggest a meet up, will anyone actually come? If i hadn't gone to the Pickwicks that day poor old LIB would have been sitting there like a pillock.

Suisse Romand, why don't you organise a small meet up of nice people?

We don't bite, unless into the burger!!

Wish those roving trucks would come closer to the station, or north of the river

I'll certainly do my best to come, I do tend to find out about these things after they've happened....

Sorry I missed LIB, I'd had to excuse myself from that party as I was in Lausanne having a great time with Minimia. Looking forward to meeting him some other time though, I hear he's really rather cute!

I'll be there, if it's during the week... An hour's drive each way between home & Geneva during the week is enough.

I've been known to make the odd trip or two down to Geneva for a burger lunch. Depending on what day it is I may well join you.

So would I, depending on the day and how far it is from the station (and who could guide me as I tend to get hopelessly lost in Geneva!).

Why me ? I'm very bad at organizing things.

Anyway, I can't eat red meat for the moment due to my iron level.
So no burgers for me, at least before middle of decembre...

I know this is asking for a huge amount, but does anyone know if any of these burger places have gluten free buns?
