I'm from Sam Diego, been in CH 6 years and I can just tell you to look elsewhere for mexican food, some other country. This microwaved, hard shell, no seasoning or spice Swiss-Mex is just nasty. && cost a fortune to boot. Avoid at all costs.
So where have you been in basel?

looking for good Mexican food in Basel

knowing that the word good means very little

so... looking for recent positive experiences
hi There I have gone twice to La Fonda and I personally love it. Its located close to the marketplatz so lots of tram options to get there, the food is good quality and great portions and reasonably priced( for Switzerland of course). Well decorated inside good service, can't really say anything bad actually. its in the old city so after dinner you can have a nice stroll around ! if you go let me know what you think...cheers

I have been to all of the "Mexican" eating places in Basel, Bremgarten & Zurich and ALL were disgusting swiss-mex. I grew up in So Cal eating mexican food. Maybe that's the problem. Now I just cook it myself at home getting my spices from the US.
Good luck to you ;o)

I like la fonda too, la Piratita offers also an excellent brunch buffet on Sundays and I think also Friday nights, I was pleasantly surprised and the people doing the cooking were Mexican...I know this because I speak Spanish... orale...

Another shout-out for La Piratita. It's definitely not swiss-mex. Probably not US style mex, either, at least not if West Coast mexican is the same as SoCal mex... More like what I've had south of Mexico. (Not trying to be disparaging, I simply don't know SoCal food culture.)

The enchiladas de mole at Piratita is great.

I totally get your frustrations. I'm from Orange County, CA and currently live in Baden. I have never found even decent Mexican food here.

El Maiz is a shop with Mexican supplies in Zürich. They have
most everything.

There is a pretty decent Mexican in Zürich Altstetten.

The margaritas are good but expensive.

La Piratita was great - awesome Margaritas and burritos the size of your head ( or at least someone with an exceptionally large head)!
I just went there last night and have found my new favorite restaurant.

Maybe it's just because it's been YEARS since I had anything resembling good Mexican food, but my burrito (pulled pork) was delicious! Very flavorful and well-made. The two other diners at my table really enjoyed their meals as well, although they commented that the Margaritas were weak, but the beer was good

We will definitely make it a point to return. Oh, and the waitress was friendly and very helpful. OH! and they have Jarritos!!!

La piratita all you can eat on Fridays. Go very hungry. If you're from California, it's like a catered Mexican event you probably have been to at someone's house. Bonus is that there is guitar player in full Charro suit.

La Fonda at Marktplatz was OK in Basel and it was the best among the ones in Basel.

Unfortunately La Fonda is closed now There is a swiss restaurant instead

In contrast to the sizeable Brazilian community here, the Mexican community here is small. Mexican Restaurants in Zürich are managed by Kosovari, Lebanese, Turks, Pakistanis and Indians. With often excellent cuisine but possibly not too genuine

You are free to doubt the financial-managerial capabilities of a Kosovari or Palestinian mechanic in regard to do a Restaurant, - But to defend them, it needs courage to try something new
