What is the food then? Korean? Japanese? And if the food is not Indian then it begs the question why are they piggy backing on "Indian restaurant" name?

The fact is that all Pakistani/Bangladeshi dishes are widely eaten in India and part of Indian food. Cooking style and mix might vary a bit but it's all same or similar. All Indian dishes on the other hand are not part of Pakistani/Bangladeshi food culture (for example south Indian food and tons of
Indian vegetarian dishes

Anyway the whole subcontinent was one country so let's enjoy the food

By the sound of it, you all seem to love Indian food and curries in particular. I'm from India and am planning to start Indian cooking classes. Really making a curry is so simple and tastes lots better when you make it at home, not to forget cheaper.
So I'm wondering if people would be interested, is this a good idea? Any suggestions?

The Kerala place in Oerlikon and Kings Curry, authentic Indian food. I wish I could say the same about Hiltl...

For quick and casual eating, I very much like the Kobal Curry & Cafe near Helvetiaplatz. I think there is another one on Seefeldstr., just opposite of Tibits. For a richer dinner, Kerela is quite good.

If you live or work near Witikon, the Kormasutra restaurant is good and a great deal for lunch! Just reopened with a new owner.

Well we all went to Masala last night. I was very impressed. Quite quiet but the staff were friendly and the food good. Came to about 50 chf a head with drinks and starters. I will be back there soon!

As noted, many (nearly all) of the UK places are Bangladeshi. I also dont understand how being Indian makes anyone better placed to review a restaurant ( having been dragged to plenty of crap ones by said).

Anyhow, the place is Muniandy Villas, Zweierstasse 55. Open from 11am till midnight. Its actually a takeaway, there are 3 or four tables, so you could eat there.

The menu (there is no menu actually) is Sri Lankan - if you go by the quality of the dhaal, then it gets top points, I am sure if you asked them to make something you can't see (e.g. dosa) they'd do it.

Since there is no menu, there are no prices either , but expect to pay 15chf to 25chf - if you are really hungry.

They dont have cream soda, .

Ordered a takeaway from Spice Route last weekend via their website.

Waited for over an hour since it was a Saturday so guessed they might be busy.

When we called them they admitted they admitted they had stopped taking web orders 3 weeks ago but were surprised to hear this was not reflected on their website.

Made the order over phone - lots of confusion about the delivery address because they could not understand the concepts of umlaut-o's explained either in fluent Swiss, fluent German or fluent English (their final preference).

Finally, nearly 3 hours after ordering and after several further heated conversations with the delivery guy over the address, we got our food.

What a waste of time.

Naans were all heavy stodge and inedible.
Pilau rice was more like peas-n-rice and actually completely tasteless.
Both curries (garlic chilly chicken and balti chicken) were thin bland dishes that were sub-UncleBens and we ate only a few mouthfuls.

For nearly CHF 100 this was awful.
For just CHF 10 it would still have been a rip-off.


So my advice - avoid.

Yeah, they do seem to be going down. I was there last week and their naans weren't up to par like before... though their dishes were still good.

I have no idea what went wrong, but for Zurich Indian ... I think they'd still be for a try (esp if you're considering King's anyway) but I'm certainly on the lookout for a better place ... like they used to be.

I think I might send them off an email with the link to here and to give them some feedback...

IMHO there's no such thing as a good indian in Zürich. The best I've had was at Khan's. It was passable but not a patch on indian food available in England, and certainly not worth CHF 120 for two people. No indian meal is worth that much - I could go to a real restaurant and have real food for less than that.

Don't bother with the indians. Go for a decent pizza instead.

Yes I quite agree I mean what's the point of being treated like sheep. What's the point of going abroad if you're just another tourist carted around in buses surrounded by sweaty mindless oafs from Kettering and Coventry in their cloth caps and their cardigans and their transistor radios and their Sunday Mirrors, complaining about the tea - "Oh they don't make it properly here, do they, not like at home" - and stopping at Majorcan bodegas selling fish and chips and Watney's Red Barrel and calamaris and two veg and sitting in their cotton frocks squirting Timothy White's suncream all over their puffy raw swollen purulent flesh 'cos they "overdid it on the first day. And being herded into endless Hotel Miramars and Bellvueses and Continentales with their modern international luxury roomettes and draught Red Barrel and swimming pools full of fat German businessmen pretending they're acrobats forming pyramids and frightening the children and barging into queues and if you're not at your table spot on seven you miss the bowl of Campbell's Cream of Mushroom soup, the first item on the menu of International Cuisine, and every Thursday night the hotel has a bloody cabaret in the bar, featuring a tiny emaciated dago with nine-inch hips and some bloated fat tart with her hair brylcreemed down and a big arse presenting Flamenco for Foreigners. And then some adenoidal typists from Birmingham with flabby white legs and diarrhoea trying to pick up hairy bandy-legged wop waiters called Manuel and once a week there's an excursion to the local Roman Remains to buy cherryade and melted ice cream and bleeding Watney's Red Barrel and one evening you visit the so called typical restaurant with local colour and atmosphere and you sit next to a party from Rhyl who keep singing "Torremolinos, torremolinos" and complaining about the food - "It's so greasy isn't it?" - and you get cornered by some drunken greengrocer from Luton with an Instamatic camera and Dr. Scholl sandals and last Tuesday's Daily Express and he drones on and on about how Mr. Smith should be running this country and how many languages Enoch Pow ell can speak and then he throws up over the Cuba Libres.


Have you tried King's Curry? Expensive, but most people would consider it to be a "real restaurant".

Oh Slaphead, please don't tell me Khans is just a figment of my imagination and that I was abducted by Aliens on the nights I thought I was there enjoying really good food.

Using superlative is always relative to the persons point of view. There are too many factors- price, taste, ease of reaching the place, presentation, service which can be arranged in number of ways to get your best place. May be not the "best" indian curry in Zurich, but I can recommend these to try out. They are NOT "real" restaurants but yeah would do the same job.

To be honest, I have been only to one or two restaurants in Zurich which seemed to me little overpriced. But I agree, that may be because I find much better "curry" at my own home cooked by my wife or myself!

I can't be sure, but I think the people who have commented here DO like to have India food like the way it should be (which means spicy and not westernised indian food ). Also I am sure you knowledgeable folks also had the same trouble explaining every interested spook around you that you really cannot being 'curry powder' from india when you come back from a holiday! Because there IS NO such thing ...

Reading all this, I think we might once try this Khans ... sounds tasty! ~smack~

Though Banana leaves and Naan is an odd combination ...

In Zürich, the best is either Tandoor in Oerlikon. Also, Tandoor
took over the old Korma Sutra.

For more South Indian meals, one may try Cima (kanonengasse 19, kreis 4, just around the corner from the kanonengasse 31 bus stop).

Be warned, its more of a kitchen than a bona fide restaurant but at 15 chf for a meal that includes a meat dish plus three veggie sides and rice or rotis, its one of the cheapest in town. Quality is great and authenticity in the meals gets 10/10.

They have a second restaurant in Stauffacherstrasse.

The are also a few take aways (with sit downs) in Josef Str. (also Kresi 4) accessed via tramstop at limmat platz.

I've been to the Kerala at the Radiostudio tram stop three times now, and the quality has been consistently good, even on "buffet night".

Not cheap though - just under 200CHF for 3 (albeit including drinks).

...and I used to live in Rusholme...

Muniandy Villas, Zweierstasse 55 for a good , cheap indian meal ( although technically Sri Lankan but close to South Indian )

The buffet night is the better night, as they seem on this night alone to acknowledge the concept of vegetable-side-dishes.
