Have you ever actually been to a chippy? I guess if he keeps taking the advice of everyone who offers it, it'll never be authentic.
I'm from Hoxton, authentic for me is chilli halibut goujons with sweet potato fries and a fresh dill & caper sauce

Actually, no. But since I'm more interested in 'I like this' than "this is authentic", I don't really care.

If you're that concerned, so on by and give him some of your own advice.

I find cider vinegar is a good alternative to malt vinegar on chips.
OK - my little secret to refilling the Sarsons shaker bottle (although proper malt vinegar isn't so hard to find, either).

Buy a jar of Boretone Zwiebeln (pickled onions in balsamic vinegar) - not only are the onions pretty damn good in their own right (closest I've found to proper ones, albeit a bit sweeter and less crunchy), but when the onions have gone, the remaining vinegar can be poured into the vinegar bottle and is great with chips.

why go all the way to attiswil which is 60kms and about an hours drive?

People in basel just need to wait 1 week for the shop to open at heuwaage.

Yes, and it's pretty good. Not the same as a real chippy (as it's a pub without the deep fat fryers etc) but the batter recipe is good, it's a decent piece of fish and the owners know what they're doing. Plus they've got British beers.

I think the Fish Inn is closed at the moment, pending a relocation.

The current building is to be knocked down to improve the safety of the roundabout there or something.

Well overdue. That junction is a nightmare of confusion.

Hey there,

do you know if evenings have now improved at Markthalle? Wondering if I should give it a try this weekend.

Lunch time is great there, lots of options and decent prices, not sure if evenings are the same..

Danke!

Re: Fish and Chips in Basel. At last.

Depends what's going on. I've been on a Friday evening and the place has been packed. I was attending a CD launch by a friend of mine, but the other bar was also busy and the few food stalls were there doing good business.

I think they're finally giving up on the rubbish flea market they run on Sundays.

Re: Fish and Chips in Basel. At last.

Thanks Adrian!

It seems there's something going on on Friday - http://www.altemarkthalle.ch/2015/01...kt-in-the-box/ so maybe we are lucky.

Do you know if food stalls are also opening in the evening? Or it's more a let's have a drink while hearing the sound of the pingpong balls?

Re: Fish and Chips in Basel. At last.

Some food stalls are open in the evenings; more on Thu and Fri (dunno about Saturdays) than earlier in the week. Just pop in and check it out!

Re: Fish and Chips in Basel. At last.

Anyone got any news on the chippy on Heuwaage?

According to the Basellandschaftliche Zeitung it was supposed to open on Friday, but I swung by today, and it's not open yet. It does look just about ready to go though, right down to the menu above the counter.

Here's sincerely hoping it'll be selling real fish and chips, not the french fries and tilapia/perch nuggets you see being passed off as fish and chips elsewhere.

Frustratingly, the "Tramways" fish and chip shop is still not open, even though the inside looks like it's very much ready to go. Let's hope it doesn't take too much longer.

I believe it will open in the next day or so but only selling chicken & chips. I was told they had a fish supply problem that will take 2 weeks to sort out!
