Ukelele Orchestra of Great Britain

The Ukelele Orchestra of Great Britain are playing in Zurich on 22nd & 23rd August as part of the festival.

They are definitely worth seeing, very funny, imaginative and no George Formby. I saw them a few years ago and they were great.

Anyone interested?

I'll second that - I saw them quite a few times in the UK, a good fun evening. I think I am abroad on those dates, otherwise I'd get on the train

Still no takers? There's a brilliant documentary about them on Radio4 which you can listen again to until next Tues, 1 July.

The Friday gig's a possibility. I almost bought an instrument from Duke-of-Uke in Spitalsfields, but I couldn't go through with it...it falls between the subtlety and versatility of a guitar, and the cutting irritating rolls of the banjo.

My grandfather played all three- I would sit spellbound listening and watching him play the guitar, did the Hula when he was in his Aloha mode, but generally ran when the banjo came out.

Re: Ukelele Orchestra of Great Britain

Earl Scruggs has got a lot to answer for. For those who don't know, the reason banjo playing sounds so fast is that there is an additional high tone string at the top of the banjo (physically above the lowest string) so it makes extremely rapid alternating between thumb and finger a lot easier. Not a lot of people know that Come to the Lausanne BBQ, and I'll demonstrate similar on the guitar.
