Re: We are opening a restaurant in Zurich! Any suggestions on our menu and entertainm

I owned my own place. Had to close due to Landlord issues (Theft, leaving building in disrepair, etc)

What kind of restaurant is it so we can suggest some dishes.

Thins I did wrong:
1.Marketing, whether or not you like it you MUST do a ton of it. From flyers to local newspaper etc etc.
2. Spend to much money in my first 3 months on staffing, electricity, opening hours. Cut down on everything you can. (ex do you really need a dishwasher (salary) or 3 waiters or can it be done with less?
3. Make it a destination: have bands play, special events, Deals etc
4. Staff are not your friends. Do not ever worry about them as 9/10 they will take an arm if you give them a finger. They can always get a different job;while you are stuck with the bills either way.

5. Pay everything straight up. That way there is no worry whether or not you will make the bills on stock (so happy I did this)

6. Lease a dishwasher(machine) Mine was new yet would brake every other weak due to heavy use.

Besides all that we loved what we did and I will also do it again in the future but it is not a get rich quick scheme so I hope you love doing it... .

Best of luck with everything!!!!!!

Thankyou so much for all of your advice . We really appreciate it as these are the points that can make or break a business.

We are aiming for a BBQ plus open buffet style and A la carte.

We have found the place but need idea's on how to attract weekday customers. Weekends are normally busy and we have a good business plan set in place. But we are wondering how to attract customers Mondays to Thursdays?

We are looking for regular English customers which is why we are writing on here for ideas.

Re: We are opening a restaurant in Zurich! Any suggestions on our menu and entertainm

First. Close on Mondays.

All across the world it is the day off in the Hospitality industry. I didn't do it at first but realized it quick enough....

Focus on just one thing though. and leave out the buffet. (maybe do a buffet salad bar) With a Buffet sooooo many people Abuse it and eat or waste WAY more than what they paid for.

I'd expect to see on the menu :

BBQ place it is all about the rub, the smokers, and the sauce!!!

Sliders with pulled chicken, pork, or beef
Ribs
coleslaw
corn
sausage
Get something for the veggies and "glutenfree's" also......

and just make good prices for those.

Another tip: Serve food LATE . I made a lot of money just during the last 3 hours when all the drunks came to eat. You would make a killing on that alone

Hi all.

Also what kind of entertainment etc etc you would like?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Some questions are to be asked

Why two threads?

And why ask such questions if you're really opening a restaurant? This kind of thing has to be in your business plan.

My tip - don't eat yellow snow. And don't rely on expats.

I am sorry if it's a daft question but don't you supposed to have this all lined up before you open a restaurant?

Where is your sense of adventure?
I'd recommend that he capitalists on his English origins and provides a menu with English specialities:
Bangers and mash
Roast beef with Yorkshire pudding
Pork pies
Extra boiled cabbage
Etc.
Although it would not be possible to guarantee a business success, it would be surely an interesting experiment.

To attract customers from Monday to Friday perhaps advertise a special offer with Groupon? We have bought a few meal vouchers on Groupon in the past and have found a few great restaurants which we did not know of or would not normally have gone to. We have been back to some a few times so this form of marketing can work!

Good luck! 👍

We are here already. It's a joint business venture and everything is pretty much sorted. My husband asked me to post on here for some suggestions.
He's also asked me not to give out too much info until just before the opening as there's always tweeking to be done!!!

I didn't realise that there was another thread which would be more appropriate. I apologised to administer who have deleted one now for me.

Re: We are opening a restaurant in Zurich! Any suggestions on our menu and entertainm

Why not do a regular Sunday lunch roast with all the trimmings?

Pot Belly's used to do it buffet style - a couple of roast meats, roast potatoes, veg, yorkshire puds, gravy. And something like apple and custard for dessert. Make it a fixed cover price that looks like decent value.

The other thing would be to do some bistro classics - check out Simon Hopkinson's book - The Prawn Cocktail Years. Things like beef in stout, jugged hare, poached fish, duck a l'orange, shepherds pie, toad in the hole, game soup, then puddings like sticky toffee, treacle sponge, apple turnover, bread and butter pudding, rice pudding. But do them properly.

Cheers,
Nick

Dont do Groupon, its a terrible way to lose money, Groupon take a whopping share of the deal.

And from my experience of Groupon deals in restaurants in Zürich, while cheaper, the food on the offers is often substandard, so the chances of a restaurant getting a returning customer is reduced. Offer lunch deals by all means. Go to local businesses and flyer yourselves, with a % discount to workers in local firms.

Most importantly prepare and cook good quality food at a reasonable price and be attentive to your customers, then you'll get regulars. Switzerland is a word of mouth place so you need that support.

If you manage these dishes I'll be along like a shot.

BUT they must be English bangers
The roast beef needs an English butcher for the right cut
Swiss pork pies have no tradition so we need those from Melton Mowbray please.
Steak and kidney pie and/or pudding would be most welcome
Fried cod, plaice or haddock would also bring me along

and so on

I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Example. If your husband is of East European origin and the location of the place is central you might turn the place into a Russian or Hungarian Restaurant, as there were such places in the past, popular but in case of the two Russians apparently MISmanaged and in case of the Hungarian at a bad location
