HELP! Lavaux/Vevey people !

American friends arriving this week-end. We're booked on the steam-boat parade in Rolle, then we'll get them to experience some of the wine tasting in Lavaux vineyards (as it will be Open Wine Cellars Day) and plan on finishing with an early evening meal somewhere nice, with fine food, but not stuffy. I need your advice with the following:

1. Knowing we'll be travelling solely by public transport, any wine producers you would particularly recommend in Lavaux area?
2. Restaurants in Lavaux area or Vevey, again, walking distance from a train station AND open on a Sunday evening. I've tried L'Auberge de Grandvaux, l'Auberge de L'Onde in St Saphorin, L'Olivier in la Tour de Pleiz, they all shut Sunday p.m.
I've also tried Trip Advisor, but many restaurants are either too stuffy or service is poor, difficult to get an accurate picture. Locals...help! We want this to be special for our friends whom we've not seen for 3 years!

If they're American, wont a MickeyD's suffice? (Obviously in the absence of a KFC).

.... and regarding the wine tasting, just enjoy, if you're not driving.

I'll be down there on Sunday. I take snacks and eat the food some vineyards produce so never have dinner, just sit in a drunken haze on the train back to Basel.

There's Le Deck in Chexbres. Reasonably accessible by foot from the train station

Re: HELP! Lavaux/Vevey people !

From all the Trip Advisors reviews and my contact with them, it would appear that:

- It changed ownership back 7 or 8 months ago
- Service is really not good
- Due to restructuring on the main restaurant, the "Deck" only serves finger food, you certainly cannot enjoy a proper meal while sitting outside.

I had gone on their site, but how to choose? In Geneva we have the same event, but all the way to the drunken stupor by which you don't really care what you taste anymore, I would like to start with something that would be authentic and quite an experience. And in Geneva, some are great and welcoming, others are either a circus or look like they don't want you in.

I've been twice before; train from Basel to Gland (cos the name makes me smirk) and then as many as possible around Luins & Vinzel.

Don't need to go there. Gland is bigger than people think and always impresses.

Re: HELP! Lavaux/Vevey people !

I see. The times I frequented there were (admittedly) before 7/8 months ago. The deck used to have a restaurant area (indoors- but with views of the lake and mountains; directly adjacent to the deck) where they had formal menu. Whilst I am (and always have been) disgruntled with the customer service at the bar/terrace area (for drinks and finger food, the restaurant itself always had super helpful staff- this and the food are the reasons why I recommend this.

Note that their website still offers this menu:
http://www.barontavernier.ch/upload/...g-mai-2015.pdf

From their website, it seems as if their main restaurant is now located in the restaurant area I mentioned above....

Luins is one of my favourite, locally produced whites, so any wine cellars producing this, could be good.

It looks very nice indeed, even if Trip Advisor gives it very mixed reviews. I decided to follow your advice and sent a booking request...no pressure on you!

Re: HELP! Lavaux/Vevey people !

Does anyone know if some wine producers will be at Nyon Castle this week end? Went there once during "Caves Ouvertes", nice raclette in the cellars of the castle watered down with lovely local wine. I can't find anything on Nyon website.

This seems to be the general consensus on Trip Advisor, this is why I did not pursue it.

Re: HELP! Lavaux/Vevey people !

i never had an issue with the service at les decks- but drinks outside are really nice. if you think a bit wider- i'd recommend eating in lausanne at the brasserie de montbenon. lovely lovely view, excellent staff and food is very nice. i would drink in lavaux and eat (and drink) in lausanne

Re: HELP! Lavaux/Vevey people !

Here's a general point, albeit a bit left field ....... over the years, and two locations, my daughters have, between them, belonged to three different tennis clubs - each one having a restaurant. These appeared to be of good quality, not overly expensive or formal - and well frequented throughout the week. In fact one (Düdingen for those from round here - link below) was always banged out at the weekend, and offered several themed events and live music and always had a good ambience.

Whether it is the same in the area(s) you're considering, those with local knowledge will have to say.
