Your tip for good places to eat in Zurich/ideally Wollishofen?

So, I have been a weekly commuter here for a month now... And this weekend the lovely missus is coming out for a 10 day stint.

I've checked out a few eateries in the local area (from outside) but would like to try a few while she's here. And it's hard to tell just by reading menus.

To give context (my idea of a good restaurant may not be anything like yours), coming from Leeds we've had our fill of Indian, Chinese etc. nothing wrong with those cuisines, it's just I can get them at home. We like experiencing local food where we travel. Have had the Neiderdorfstrasse Swiss German beer hall type experience and we will be doing that again of course. Been to some fancy places in Zurich centre with work, none that were particularly memorable (apart from the bill).

There seem to be few Italian/Tichino places around, which do people recommend? Haven't noticed any overtly Swiss influenced restaurants in Wollishofen. But then I haven't had time to venture out there yet very far from the tram stops. Other European restaurants?

Last time she came over we went to restaurant Burghli which was great, (and we will be going again) but it's not exactly a midweek eating place.

Suggestions and recommendations please. I'd particularly like the sort of places I can go to again on my own when she's not here and the prospect of a wet windy Wednesday and my sad Migros microwave ready meal for one doesn't appeal...

Regards

Ian

Re: Your tip for good places to eat in Zurich/ideally Wollishofen?

Anytime but June / July / August, the Fribuorger Fonduestuebli is a winner: http://www.fribourger-fondue-stuebli.ch

If you want to go upscale "Spice" at Rigiblick is a good option: http://www.restaurantrigiblick.ch/spice-2/?lang=en

Even a bit more up the quality ladder is "The Restairant" at the Dolder Grand Hotel https://www.thedoldergrand.com/en/di...ne-dining.html

Maison Menasse enters with the promise of laid-back fine dining for less money: http://www.maisonmanesse.ch/dinner

"Sein" is more in the center and also very decent: http://www.zuerichsein.ch/restaurant.html

Good authentic Italian can be had at Ristorante Cacio & Pepe http://www.restaurantcacioepepe.ch

If you are up to the Brussles / Parisian feel, go to Brasserie Louis for mussels and chips http://www.brasserie-louis.ch

For all-out top-hits of swiss traditional dishes, Zeughauskeller is a safe bet: http://www.zeughauskeller.ch/en/home

To get the saussage beatup, go to Au-Gust http://au-gust.ch

Does that help for a start?

Albert, that's a brilliant start!

The sausage place looks amazing... the fondue place is a definite to try.

Keep the suggestions coming. Especially from anyone who has tried what's on offer in Wolleshofen area, where I can walk/roll home afterwards without fear of falling under a tram trying to get on it...

Regards

Re: Your tip for good places to eat in Zurich/ideally Wollishofen?

The fondue place doesn't exactly piss around does it. Chf 27.80 for a 200grm fondue + Chf 5.90 for pickles !

Admitedly i live close to Canton of Fribourg, capital of fondue world, so say, where we pay Chf 18.-- for fondue, (300grms) with or without pickles !!!!!

I know Zurich is more expensive, but even so this place isn't in a particularly good area from what i can see/know

Open Fendant wine at Chf 5.30/dl makes getting pissed quite expensive too, here we pay around Chf 3.80/dl

Try the Shamrock pub in Wollishofen (just opposite the last stop of tram 7. Good food, good company and friendly service.

Two places that I like which are close to you (apart from the Shamrock already mentioned) are

Fischer's Fritz of course it is even better in summer but the little restaurant is also nice. http://www.fischers-fritz.ch/

Another nice one ist he Belvoirpark. This is actually a school where people learn the Hotel business so all the cook and waiters are students. Hence it is cheaper and a really nice and not snobbish atmosphere. They also have a beautiful garden and the bistro is particularly nice. Again might be a little too late for that now unless you catch a beautiful day. Maybe it’s not a mid-week eatery but it’s maybe a nice option close by for a special occasion. http://www.belvoirpark.ch/restaurant/willkommen.html

Re: Your tip for good places to eat in Zurich/ideally Wollishofen?

Popped into the Shamrock yesterday, will be sampling one of the burgers later in the week.

Last night we ate at Restaurant Albisgarten. Very nice friendly atmosphere. Very good food. I had carpaccio starter, Zuricher Getschelz (sorry for not knowing how to spell it?) the veal in mushroom sauce served with Rosti followed by pannacotta. Maybe Pricey by UK standards but don't seem overly pricey by Zurich rates. And they do cheaper options eg pizzas which looked very nice. 3 courses each for two with wine, water and beers, 140chf.

Double bonus (or not). The woman there thought I was German. Considering I can barely read a menu, that was a pretty good accolade for my pronunciation of the few words I do know. "Noch einer" being among them...

Regards

The Rheinfelder Bierhalle in Niederdorf has good schnitzel that was reasonably priced. They only take cash. http://www.rheinfelder.ch

Try the SASSO at the rail-stn (closed Sat/Sun). But also the Shamrock Pub and the Medina down the road offer nice meals

Italian cuisine: Masi Wine and Bar http://www.masiwinebar.ch

I had the veal liver with polenta and a side of grilled veggies (extra, as there are no veggies in this dish) - excellent...if you like liver. Our server knew her wine, and the choice was very good.

Four star for ambience, food and wine - the service was fine, from host, to coat check attendant, to server
Three stars for the toilets - clean but small.

Re: Your tip for good places to eat in Zurich/ideally Wollishofen?

Loads to choose from! Thanks to all for recommendations.

Zeughousekeller - awesome beer menu. Yes its touristy, but good (if not too busy).

Johanniter is one of our faves anyway.

We also went to Mellow cafe in wollishofen - very friendly owner, a bit like an Italian boudoir inside, but great home made food. If you choose the right thing, (which the lovely missus didn't, unfortunately.)

Adlers Swiss Chuchi in the old town served us amazing wild season boar and deer with spatzle in a Swiss-tastic atmosphere, amid the slightly overpowering smell of burning cheese...

Going to work our way through some other recommends in the near future.

Thanks all!

Ian
