I found a great Hamburger in Switzerland!

Yes, it is true. The burger was pure beef, red in the middle, the buns lightly grilled, and the vegetables fresh. None of that Swiss meatball burger, or American fast food. A real hamburger.

After running through Basel naked, shouting "Eureka", my son pointed out to me that we where dining burgers in the Basel airport. Technically not Switzerland. Oh the misery.

Unfortunately, if you want a good burger, you still have to go to France.

Did it have beetroot and an egg?

Some more burger places...

Zurich: Zic Zac (on the Niederdorf), Paddys, ...

St Gallen: that American theme restaurant (whose name I have forgot ). Then again, they have been known to lose orders...

Also, it doesn't count as a burger unless it's got at least a kilo of home cut chips on the side...

Re: I found a great Hamburger in Switzerland!

For the best burger in Switzerland, if you want the opinion of a "gun toting", "meat loving" Texan is Arizona Saloon about an hour away from Zurich in the middle of nothing.

AND. . . . if you ask Janina to make you Margaritas the American way they will be the best you can find (ie: not too sweet)

Worth running naked in the street for

Re: I found a great Hamburger in Switzerland!

I have to say, I'm lucky and have two places very close to me that do excellent burgers...both in Sihl City...

I would say the best is at Urbano, a bar that is attached to the 4 seasons hotel, pretty much the closest shop/restaurant to the SihlCity Nord tram/bus stop. It is very juicy, usually cooked to medium/rare so is a bit pink in the middle and has a sort of tomato mild salsa sauce on it and Bubbles will be delighted to know, it comes with a mountain of tasty french fries, with little heinz pots of ketchup and mayo alongside. It probably has some salad too, or not, doesn't really concern me It is about 20 CHF.

The second is from a bar called Imagine, near the actual doors to the main shopping area. The burger is immensely decadent, a big thick wad of meat topped off with caramelised onions and garlic butter...however the side is a big pile of rocket and boiled/fried potatoes with rosemary, not the best imho. Cost 25 CHF.

I recommend both though, and overall would give urbano a 9 and imagine an 8.5

That all depends on which side of the airport you were dining in at the time as half of the airport is technically Switzerland and the other half France.

Re: I found a great Hamburger in Switzerland!

I was in the French part of the airport. I know because the service sucked, and the waitresses where all irritated French people.

Surprized to hear about great burgers in CH-land. I will definately check out the places mentioned - but Zig Zag, please be reasonable. That is a meatball burger.

Re: I found a great Hamburger in Switzerland!

Only place in Lausanne to get a good burger is "The Great Escape", which is actually also a good bar at the same time.

The place is kinda hard to find, but when you are at Place la Riponne and standing in front of the museum/university library head up the stairs on the right side towards the curch. Half-way up there is a small plato and presto you have arrived.

Most notably also the best fries in Lausanne too.

Re: I found a great Hamburger in Switzerland!

Hey all,

I gotta bring this topic back to the top. I'm an American in Switzerland, and I'm starting to miss the burger joints.

I've really had the best burgers in the US, Palm Springs to be exact....

Anyways,

1. I can't find the place 'the letten' can someone give me an address please?

2. Any more suggestions Zurich area for burgers?

Thanks, <3

Re: I found a great Hamburger in Switzerland!

I also did the Burger Hunt and ate so came across so many bad ones I just started leaving them on the plate.

Hands down the best burger in Zurich is the Park Hyatt in the lounge (basically the restaurant in the lobby). It is about 30chf which is alot but it is good...... really really good.

ZigZag is okay, but you cant go to the in the old town, you have to go to the one at Letzigrund = much better, aimed at locals, not nearly as good as Park Hyatt, but about 10chf cheaper and a more relxed atmosphere. I just heard this week that James Joyce has a good one but I havent tried it yet.

You should try both and let me know your thoughts.

Re: I found a great Hamburger in Switzerland!

I've been making them myself from beef mince. I usually just use beef, a tiny dab of salt, a bit of garlic, thai seven-spice and paprika (a small concession to where we're living). Cooked under the mighty George Foreman grill, with its built-in bun warmer (in the word of Sir Mix-a-Lot: "don't want none
unless you got buns, hun"), it makes a passable facsimile of a burger. I'd suggest that if you're using locally-sourced burger buns (with sesame seeds, naturally), the the Migros ones are marginally better than the Co-op. Much in the same way that Swine flu is better than Bird flu.

Who adds all these spices to a burger? A real burger is beef and only beef, cooked medium rare, put on a bun, cheese optional. No real burger has spices infused into it. If the beef is good, you don't need it.

I come from Texas & been told I make a darn good burger. I put garlic salt, salt, an egg, worchesteshire sauce and some bread crumbs. I believe a burger has to have some flavor in addition to the ground beef taste (it enhances the flavor of the meat).

I am sure your hamburger si fine however, I disgree as I am a hamburger traditionalist If the beef is good enough and cooked right you don't need anything else, salt is okay. I have the same issue with steak and people who use steak sauce, of coure I like the Florentine steaks which involves some added flavors on the outside.
