[Vevey] Any Nightlife?

Hey there. Im moving to vevey in less than a month. Any people out there got any suggestions for nightlife? What do you guys do there? At home (Malta), I am used to an active nightlife... barbeques, beachparties, bars and clubs... As I will be staying there alone, I do not wish to be forced to stay home or walk my dog all night Oh, by the way, I am a 29 year old female Some people suggested to go to montreaux. However I got no transport there so unless there is a 24 hour public transport system, I would rather stay close to home in vevey.

Re: Any Nightlife?

From Malta to Switzerland?! You gonna find quite a big difference in attitudes ... methinks.

I had an interesting discussion last evening, with a Swissy male friend. We were in a pub, nice music playing .... and I noted that the Swiss do not move a muscle to music ... they just talk and drink. I asked my friend why the Swiss do not seem to enjoy dancing? This has been puzzling me for quite a few years - watching this passive display of "pub behaviour".

His explanation was that Swiss men consider dancing as foreplay to sex ....!!!!!! OMG! was my reaction - OH NO! Surely not! Do they not ever feel like just moving to music? My friend re-assured me that it realy is true ..... Dancing is a form of Eroticism here in the Cold Climates of the North!

I have also seen, that they seem to enjoy, and pack the pub out, when a "Table Dancer" is hired for entertainment - So possibly this bears witness to my friends statement about dancing?

He also agreed, that yes, people from the warmer climates are more spontaneous and move freely to the beat of music.

Anyway, as some form of comfort - maybe in the cities life is more exciting and people not so inhibited by cultural restraints? ... Perhaps the mixture of foreigners there, adds some verve to the night-life?!

Re: Any Nightlife?

Yeah it is hey?! It was "jaw-drop" information!!!!!!

Now its just added another "inhibition" to my newly acquired integration menu ..... it`s never again gonna be simply fun to get up and dance when some good Tribal Type music plays! ...... ha ha haaaaa haaa cough cough haa haa ha!

I don't know how true that really is. The Swiss have a way of telling you such things in any situation for whatever convenience. I think they might have been putting him on. Although I have yet to meet a Swiss guy who can dance.

Re: Any Nightlife?

Nevermind the peanut gallery. Vevey is home to some excellent nightspots including the Ve club, and possibly one of the best bars in the world for folk music: Bout du Monde.

If that's not enough Lausanne is just a few minutes away and has late-night transport back to Vevey.

Oh, and just to be clear, when I say folk music I mean the kind that inspires crazed dancing till dawn. Here's the link: http://www.leboutdumonde.ch/

Re: [Vevey] Any Nightlife?

The Bout du Monde is about 5 minutes walk from my place, I'm in there all the time. Always have been. I remember it opening a few years ago!

I've played quite a few gigs there, I'm part of the decor so strange that I've never noticed you lot in there?!

Val told me that there's two English blokes who go in every Wednesday for a pint and salt n vinegar walkers so maybe that's you two!

I also play football with most of them on a Sunday and am playing in a tournament for them on the 30th of August.

They used to organise games nights but I think that's finished now. Otherwise, there is a chess tournament starting on the 1st of September (I'm the only girl signed up so far and there are over 30 of us taking part!).

They have bands on most weekends and organise home-made short film nights and the like.

There's no other pub like it. Always something going on, the staff are all brilliant (have to say that as they're all mates of mine...), excellent selection of beers, not too expensive and ..... WALKERS SALT N VINEGAR CRISPS!!!!!!

They have a festival once a year in the theatre next door. It's at the beginning of October (5,6,7 this year I think...)

Vive le Bout du Monde!

P.S. There are a few other places in the local area too (Le Petit Lém in the old town; I'm often in the Rex but just coz I know everyone there too...) Otherwise, I go to Montreux quite a bit as my mate Keith has a bar there which is full of expats all the time. They have all the football on every weekend so I'm often there too propping up the bar once the footie season starts. Montreux is only 5 minutes away, buses run till around 11pm and last train back in the week is just after 12, otherwise a taxi back would probably cost you about 15-20 chufs.

As you can tell, I'm very rarely at home...

I've lived in this area for about 8 and a half years and played hundreds of gigs around here so most people know me (or know of me). If you are in the Bout du Monde, just ask for Jenny

It's not open all night you know.

Re: [Vevey] Any Nightlife?

Seriously Bout du Mond is one of my favorite bars in the whole world. I don't get there much any more being that we have two small children at home, but I was at the last festival.

Why haven't they been updating the schedule?

Re: [Vevey] Any Nightlife?

it didn't take long for the swiss-bashing floodgates to open in this thread.

You'll find nightclubs in Lausanne, some might even have people dancing inside.

What schedule?

The program for the next festival comes out this week. I know one of the bands playing but I'm not supposed to.... I also know that there'll be quite a big headliner. It'll be a French act. That's all I know.

They used to have a monthly programme on the website, but it hasn't been updated for years.

I just realized that I'm going to be out of town for this year's festival, so sadly I'll miss it. Happily I'll be in Paris, which also has several of my favorite bars.

Re: [Vevey] Any Nightlife?

I cant recommend too much as I have only been in Lausanne for a total of 3 nights. Next week that time will be rapid expanding.

But, in the short time I was there, I found a Bavarian bar, a brewery, and D! (dance club). Actually, this only took me a few hours to find it all. So 18 minute train ride (from what I read) and you can be in Lausanne.

As far as northern Europeans not dancing, can't say that what people have said is true. I cant argue about the swiss. I will say you can go to Hamburg (pretty far north) and there good dance clubs and the jungs dance (now, I can say this because I am one of them, but the white guys only think they can dance, they dont really dance..but they try). My dancing skill goes up significantly with more beer...

Is this what you mean? http://www.leboutdumonde.ch/Pages/programme.php

They don't have anything on in August because of holidays etc. If you click on "mois suivant" you'll get what's on in September.
