Re: English Pub or Swiss Bar

We went to a Swiss pub in Baar last night! I have never seen Swiss
party like that and be that outgoing.

They were playing all Swiss music, and it was really lustig!

It's not an English pub, and never will be, but if I'd wanted to spend all my life in English pubs, I'd never have come here in the first place.
I suppose I should have called them 'Pseudo English Pubs' or 'English Themed Bars' then?

Not at all - any more than this forum should be called the English-Speakers Living in Switzerland Forum.

These pubs are 'English pubs', even if they are not 'English pubs'.

Sorry for the lack of clarity in my writing. It's early yet.

When i first moved here (many many years ago) my favorite pub was the Pickwick pub, because of the atmosphere, and the people who went there, but now i prefare the Swiss bars. Even if i wanted to go to the Pickwick pub i couldn`t because it closed down in St.Gallen a few years ago, so we have no English Bars near us.
the pickwick pub in St Gallen is open now though, They have signs for Mr Pickwick and the O Five Pub. None of them can speak English, and it has little atmosphere, but its not too bad.
Still the Irish pub in Zürich is so much nicer, you ever been to Paddy Reillys? Its great, even if you can't smoke there any more, the atmosphere and the music is great, and they all speak English, its really cool!

Re: English Pub or Swiss Bar

Depends who I go out with. Id prefer to go to english/irish pubs because they generally have guiness and play sporting matches (like the rugby and AFL football). I love paddys and oliver twists in Zurich. Run by aussies If I go out with my wife and other friends we generally try and find a nice swiss place. But there is a distinction between a swiss bars (El lokal, Hafenknife etc) that we head out to and a traditional swiss bar/restaurant where people look at you funny when you walk in. We generally don't go to the latter because I guess we're conscious about our dodegy german skillz and there never seems to be much atmosphere (or patrons for that matter). I think they're mostly eating places anyway

sorry if it's going slightly off topic, but can someone tell me is there really an "english pub" anymore in London? (i only frequent there, sorry)
'cos i seem to recall reading an article about the pub going all gastropubby and wine bar etc...ist this true?
or is it just 'cos London is so big, there isn't that cosy-local-down-the-road thing? i also remember being in Brighton alot and the pubs have all gone trendy also (serving fajitas and what not)
Wine-bars in London ? Sure, there are excellent ones. But wine in pubs/bars in London always proved to be a catastrophe. While the Port they had always was good to excellent. A strange world

The idea was copied from French wine bars started in the 1930ies .... but yes, possibly not a too good idea for the U.K.

I however think that the Hotel Hirschen in the Graue Gasse with the Weinschenke got it quite nicely
