Though Switzerland is not mentioned, I thought I would point anyone interested to a TimesOnline article "Keep the Change".
It is.

Re: Tipping

yes it is

"The custom has spread to Britain. Earlier this year Prince William and friends on holiday in Switzerland were exposed for leaving a tip of just 1 per cent: Fr10 on a Fr1,000 bill. Perhaps they got confused with their arithmetic."

Tipping in Nail Salon

I started a thread 2 weeks ago about finding a Nail Salon in Thalwil. I found one and have an appointment for tomorrow for a manicure and pedi.

Next question: Is the tip already included? If not, is there a customary percentage for a manicure and pedicure?

Please ladies...help me out.

Thanks.

ps - btw, nettie, if you are reading this, Laguna is only working Monday-Wednesday till the end of the month so I'll have to wait to check it out.

Re: Tipping in Nail Salon

Well I found a great place in Thalwil called Centro Bellezza. The owner, Julia, speaks excellent English. Its located on Florastr 14, across from Coop and down the street.

The place is beautiful. They offer a list of spa services from hair cutting to coloring. (I watched a stylist blow out a woman's hair. The woman had very thick, curly hair - she got is as straight as spaghetti!) to facial, massage etc.

If you need a couple of relaxing hours away -this is the place to go.

Best of all? When I left, Julia was so darling, she gave me her card and said if I needed any kind of information about anything to give her a call.

Oh and re the tipping? I called my Swiss SIL and she said for a manicure she tips between 2-5 francs and the same for a manicure.

Re: Tipping in Nail Salon

Yeah i discovered that about Laguna on Thursday. I tried to book in for some defuzzing. One girl is on holiday and the other girl is only working part time. Then when the first girl comes back of holiday the second girl is leaving to work somewhere else. There used to be a pregnant lady working there too but i'm guessing shes off popping out the sprog.

Re: Tipping in Nail Salon

Well since my partner runs her own nail business i think tipping is a great idea. Seriously like every other service if it's done well then leave a tip. 10-20 francs would be appropriate depending on cost of treatment. My girlfriend does a really superb job (trained by theSwiss champion - yes there is one!!) for a good price and several folks from here have been very happy with the results.

I know nothing of nail salons, but last year there was an excellent thread on tipping in general.

Re: Tipping

I completely agree with your outlook on tipping. I know I shouldn't mention this, but I am from US and I hate (hate, hate) tipping there. I like getting a bill here and its is up to me what I leave for the staff and not pressured into thinking what they would say if I leave a small tip. In some cases (in US) I did not leave a tip and a waitress would run after me and ask why I didn't leave her a tip. I was surprises she even asked because her service was ****. I like to be the one who decides and not enforced by society.

Firstly don't accuse me of having a crappy attitude. (I take it you're American, if not I apologise)

Secondly........why are you mentioning North America???? I don't care what they do there, this is Switzerland we are talking about.

What I am saying is that when you accept a job as a waiter, you should NOT count on tips, simple as that. There is no obligation to leave a tip. Even if the service was excellent. You pay the prices that are on the menu. By the way I was also a waiter when I was young for a couple of months and, even though I was underpaid, I did not dislike customers who did not give me a tip. It's a choice...

What they do in North America, (in my opinion) is crazy....e.g. as you said 15-20%!!!!!!!! What if you don't have any extra money to tip? And don't take it for granted that everybody should pay by credit card...The norm is cash...Credit cards are something extra.

IF PEOPLE IN NORTH AMERICA DID NOT TIP 15-20% THEN WAITERS WOULD GET A HIGHER WAGE...SIMPLE!!!!That's where the crappy attitude is!

Re: Tipping in Nail Salon

Really?? 10-20 CHF? that sounds too much as the services already pricey here! But I see where you are coming from since it is your partner that's in business

Re: Tipping

Seems that there is a general attitude towards tipping, however, I have quite a different approach.

I am from a non-tipping society (Denmark) where tips are almost always included in the bill (as here, atleast in the German part of Switzerland).

Therefore, it is very very seldom that I tip in any occasions and it for sure has to be something very special to call for tipping. By special I am not talking just talking about the service, but everything. Nice service is best rewarded with honesty and compliments for the nice experience it was.

Am I cheap? No, I am fair. Why should I pay for service twice? By all means if service is not included in the bill I will gladly tip the 10 - 20% but otherwise not.

When I moved to Switzerland I did tip (in Basel and Zürich), which more or less made my Swiss friends giggle at me, so it is by far not mandatory to tip.
Besides that if you only get good service because of tipping, the restaurant is anyway not worth supporting. Imagine in any other job (which also has a "real" salary here in Switzerland) that you would only give good service if tipped - if you think this is fair, remember to tip next time in Coop

Re: Tipping

We seem to have three Threads on the same subject of Tipping all receiving answers. If I merge them, because they will then be 'sorted' by the date of the posts we'll have answers to one following different questions in the other. I'm closing this Thread, which is the oldest of the three!

The discussion will be continued here.
